Sausagedog 7,381
Stuff the NV! I just took my lamp and a gun mounted lamp. Went to check that earth I found. Been up since 4am, 10 hours at work etc I didne want to walk far. I turned around and flashed the field again before it went out of view. Bingo, a glint. I got in the field and walked in but stayed in the shade from the moon's light. A good squeal and the one eyed given came in a treat although cautiously. At 70 yards or so she stopped facing me. The sears tripped effortlessly and the thump on this still night was clearly heard. She crumpled and never moved. She is not suckling and hasn't for a while. Her cubs will show themselves soon and they will survive without her now until that is we meet! 9 Quote Link to post

Yes, they get fed up with me playing my digderedoo and drawing rude pictures of the queen so they let me out late at night when all the kids are in bed. 6 Quote Link to post

si brown 8,486
nice one sd.. good to see the jim jams still gong strong there is defiantly still a place for the good old lamp.. my mates a lamp lad and 80% of the time a shotgun foxer! I wouldn't be without me thermal for spotting but my mates picked up on a few ive missed out on spotting, there hard to spot in hedges and walking down the tracks but he picks them up no problem with a cheap mega lamp of amazon £25, it picks eyes out like you wouldn't believe! shot a bonus one the other week just as we were putting the kit away, I thought it was a hare but me mate wasn't having it so I got on the sticks he lit it up and whack it hit home! thought it had run as it was further than I ever take shots at.. then he walked up to me with it! put the range finder on it the next time we met up and it was a nats cock off 300yrd, so ive been testing what my home loads are running at they may bee a wee bit hot but not blown myself up and the brass looks fine was going to zero me night vision for the 6.5 and thought feckit im sticking with me lamp 1 1 Quote Link to post

A lot of the foxes i have to deal with have run the gauntlet and been well educated. Nothing worse than sitting waiting for three or four hours for a fox to turn up then when it does and you light it up, it's off like a whippet out of trap one. It is really, no REALLY disheartening. I know as I generally go in the opposite direction to my mate for that reason, I’ve watched them leg it and he’s not even seen them but he’s picked up on ones sat on glowing muck heaps twenty yards from where I’ve been sat and couldn’t see with the thermal! he waits till Im on the sticks I call the shot he fires the searchlight up that’s that bright they don’t have a clue what’s going on then bang! like you said there are ones that just take off but the majority of the time I shout at them and they can’t help but look back 2 Quote Link to post
Sausagedog 7,381
Well after mornings and night obs I finally caught up with one of the cubs. A cub vixen so that's good. I got a green pill for my lamp and it was oblivious to it but then again cubs are oblivious to any lamp! Definition is worse though. Anyhow she came trotting past me at something like forty yards so I loosed 40g of #3 from a vintage 1980's Viri cartridge. Saw nothing else but "I'll be back"! 4 Quote Link to post
ianm 2,594
At least you have managed to catch up with one of them. How do you rate the green light? I have a green pill somewhere for a nightmaster 800 torch but i couldn't see anything at all with it. Quote Link to post

When it came trotting past at a good 40y I could barely see it! I will test it some more as soon as possible. Quote Link to post
