RIP Slinky ☹️

Recommended Posts

Slinky is no more. She has been doing some serious killing recently.

Chickens, ducks and lambs all succumbed.

However, she still dodged me at night. Just a coutious acknowledgment of her presence at night in my lamp or NV.

Things came to a head when recently she moved into my neighbour's barn! Yes that's right, right next door to me! She has as far as I know a 3 square miles range to hunt on but took to staying next door! Some might think for the chickens but not me! No she was keeping tabs on my movements I am convinced! My neighbor reported seeing her bolt from the barn twice and that she had a nice bed all made up in there.

Sunday came and I was out at 5am. Nothing, just bits of fresh chicken everywhere again. I walked on to the far end of the farm. The pheasants were all happy and I decided to return home disappointed again. Just as I turned a single cock bird cocked up. As I tried to get the birds location there she was! From my elevated position I observed her about 300yds away traveling away from me but carrying something dark, a few black rabbits reside here so I assumed it was was one of them. I decided to observe her rout not holding much hope of keeping up with her but then she suddenly stopped and started eating her catch! I wasted no time and lunged my fat body in her direction keeping some holly in the hedge between us. I got to an old gate next to said holly. Squeezed myself over it and peered around the holly....there she was just 80yds away tucking into breakfast. I lifted the Marlin, steadied my breathing. The reticle settles on high lungs and the shot rang out. In the scope I watched her drop instantly and then I let the little Marlin rock with repeated shots to ensure her demise. Slinky was done!

I lifted my hat to her and praised her cunning and charm but she had more surprises for me!

First though I gave her a departing kiss.

The extra surprise was that her meal was not a rabbit but a fox cub!

She was attempting to sever it's head like normal for a fox after it has killed.

My theory is she is removing rivals, I know she likes a fight!

I am 100% convinced it's slinky by her missing white tail tip. My trail camera images show it as missing and a short tail.

My neighbor recognised the white rear leg to as she fled the farm yard.

Rest now Slinky, I won't forget you.

SD.

I used Hornady varmint express. A 40gn hp copper washed 22. 1160fps on the box.

I was going to pick some of those up before the lockdown, but I kept leaving it until I’d used some bits and bobs up and by that time they sold out anyway. My bad? hopefully find some later in the year to try??

Well done getting on terms with your nemesis.

Whenever i have succeeded in killing a particularly good adversary i feel both elated at my success and a twinge of regret that i no longer have a worthy foe, if that makes sense.

cracking write up mr sausage, you are giving ianm a run for his money the way you told your adventure, I’ve seen vixens kill other cubs before but never try to eat them, but I suppose this is not uncommon as many animals eat their own young

They are quite accurate and just flatten the useful range out a little. Not to noisy either. I like them.

I don't know if it's her cub or not, was it sick? Was it just instinct controlling her actions? I don't know but it's never boring and always interesting.

What I also know is a vegan or vegetarian would never see this and if they did, they would never publish it!
