Another good evening on the foxes.

Recommended Posts

Got up the shoot at 8:00 had a quick check of the zero which was still bang on, 1” high at 100 yds. Got to the spot where I wanted to be alongside a cover crop where I’d seen a fox two nights before but the wind was completely wrong so I changed my plan and drove two field on where I know there is always a fox lurking. There are a set of tramlines which run right down the middle of the field which I always park up on and it was ideal as the wind was coming right into my face. What wasn’t ideal though was that there was a fox already out in the field which clocked me before I clocked it and went running if into a wood. However knowing the ground I was certain there would be another. After about a 30 minute wait I dropped fox number 1. 214yds, ten minutes later I had 2 on the deck and I’d literally just walked back from the 240 yards to pick number 2 up and there was another heading on the exact same path as this one had took, so I jumped back on the truck gave it a whistle and it fell at 216 yds. On inspection the first one I shot was a mature vixen and definitely one of the others had identical markings and colour as her but, the other is a lot lighter although it walked on the same path across the field as the one which matched the vixen, could it be from the same litter and just had its fathers traits or pure coincidence it was on the same path...

all in all though a very productive evening as all three were heading to a wood where it two weeks time will have poults in it!

Nice write up Jarvis and bloody good shooting . My poults have been to wood since the beginning of July and I’ve been busy on the foxes . They could have done some damage so a job well done . That drone is some bit of kit .

Yer you’ve got to keep on them. I’ve had 16 here on the shoot since January. It’s only on 500 acres but got to keep hitting them!

The drone is fantastic! Makes such a difference having that clarity out at 200yds plus and you can see  way further than you can shoot!

The shoot I keeper is 1500 acres and I’m up to 38 since January 1st but that isn’t just shooting, that’s Terriers , snares and trapped cubs . There is the wheat to come off yet so I expect to be well past 40 in a few days . Seeing nothing around the pens now and the birds are nice and settled and out and about now . Amazing the difference to the birds if they aren’t being bothered by Charlie, makes them so much easier to keep ......I’m touching wood now lol . That thermal is the business, if they are there you will see them , and even if you don’t get a shot at them it gives you information on their whereabouts so you can chuck a wire down if they are ultra shy. ATB .

They are only half way through the wheat at the shoot at the moment and it's all wheat at therevthis year so I'm chomping at the bit to get on the rest of it!

Yes the drone is great but the thermal is the bo!!ocks! Like you say even if you don't get the shot you know where they are or where they are coming from/ going to.

bledding hell mate you’ve got your hands full

when do you sleep ?

atb

Not been out for a while cos of the moon really and also I haven’t had any problems around the pens , as soon as they cut the wheat I will be nocturnal again . The Mrs will be moaning cos I’m always yawning and nodding off after tea . But I enjoy it , best part of the job as far as I’m concerned . It’s a challenge, you get out of the job what you put in , and now is the time to put in the hard yards , keep the shoot as vermin free as you can . Soon be winter and early nights in front of the box .

Exactly right you get out what you put in! I only do the keeping part time, but I'm up there every day this time of year and this will be my third season and the last two have been great. Most importantly the shoot owners are very happy with how things are going. They pay me for my time feeding birds pen work and dogging in etc to go towards my fuel as I live 25 mins away from the shoot but , I get all the pest control, fishing and deer stalking I could possibly want for!
