IanB 0
I'm using a 70-300mm canon IS USM lens at the minute, great for wildlife/action shots but I'm after something with a larger aperture... has anyone used the canon f 1.4 50mm primary lens, It seems a good deal for the money its only for close up work though.. Whats everyone else using.?
Dawn B 212
I use the 75-300mm Canon USM lens for longer shots/wildlife etc.. and a 28-135mm IS lens for closer stuff and faster action stuff.

danielt 1
50mm F1.4 is generally used as a portrait lens, although you can use it in any situation. With the F1.4 you need to be spot on with the focusing as the depth of field will be minute in comparison to F4 and alike. what about an allrounder lens, something like a 24-70mm F2.8 Sigma or Canon. Not the best of lenses, but great allrounder lens, Sigma 28-300mm lens, compact and great for any situation. Reasonable price too. I use Canon 16-35mm F2.8 24-70mm F2.8 70-200mm F2.8 and a 1.4x TC Edited December 29, 2007 by danielt

Alright for some I just have the standard 18 - 55 mm Nikon lens that came with my camera that I use for close ups and ratting pics, and a cheap 70 - 300 mm Nikkor that I use for long distance running pics. I'd love a macro lens maybe one day, but its a luxury. el cheapo standard 18 - 55 lens
tiny tim 22
how do you find the sigma 120-300 F2.8......fancied one was a bit worried about the weight
J Darcy 5,871
how do you find the sigma 120-300 F2.8......fancied one was a bit worried about the weight yes it is heavy, but its very fast. you cannot have everything. I am still learning about he focusing and zoom with one hand and have just purchased a monopod to support it. At the mo i think its a good lens, but with time i will hopefully be saying its a great lens. Already got some good pics with it.....only thing is, i got it covered in soil on xmas eve!! ha ha ha did look at getting a 300-800 sigma, but they are too big really for anything except tripod wildlife shots. maybe one day though..... my next 2 purchases will be a dedicated 5X lifesize macro and twin macro flash units, but that wont be for a while yet.... my old canon 300D is still going strong, its battered to death, scratched and dented, but still taking pics..... J Darcy 5,871
Im usint 2x Canon lenses one is a 70 - 300mm USM IS and the other is a 17 -85mm USM IS and i can not fault either of them.. but i wished i had listened to some advice a while ago what someone told me about being able to get lenses just as good as the canon lenses for less than half the price.. .. i would of saved a few quid if i had listened....Millet compare sigma to canon and there is no difference, except price....and the sigma has a wider range of lenses IMHO..... price isnt my main factor, i like a fast lens and the f2.8 from sigma is ace....in reviews it gets rated above the canon ones of similar spec
J Darcy 5,871
Ill have to have a better look into the lenses later on mate as im looking to get something quicker but with double the zoom i already have.. im also after a good macro for the summer time so keep us posted on how you go with your's when you get it..Millet its ok having double the zoom in theory, but you struggle to find the object if the zoom is too high at the lower end.....if you catch my drift....also, generally, the longer the zoom the more light you will need , so in order to be able to shoot you need decent light or a fast lens.....dont buy anything until you have come down and tried mine out.....or next time im up i will bring my gear with me and you can have a mess about with it...... the 50-500 sigma may look ideal for you...but its rather slow @ 6.3, however on a good manfrotto tripod you will be surprised how good it is.....there is another way....and thats to get a fast (2. lens and fit a 1.4 or a 2X converter on...this should only increase the light neede by a couple of stops....in theory (!!) i could get a 240-600 thats f4.3 if i incorperate my 2x converter...i will be experimenting this season......
