Communism has always been anti Semitic......no great surprise about that. However, this thing with corbyn really is a storm about f**k all as usual......another non story from our esteemed media.

An easy mistake to make

A educated man is not always a wise man , that's not a dig at Chris I'm   just saying education and wisdom are very different things

I got O level English, not maths!

Minority groups align themselves with those that will best support their interests. They vote for those that support them. If they don't have someone they'll fund someone that will run to support them.

Last I saw in Britain no one's really that arsed and the government reflects those decisions.

I'm meant as opposed to the "do the math" that you're probably more familiar with............never mind - if you have explain it.............:sorry:

As I alluded to earlier, minority interests, of all kinds, will probably find a more sympathetic ear with Labour............which is why it's full of all manner of weirdos, fringe lunatics and ne'er-do-wells !

That's a tough one, mate. White people make up 90% of the country. White christians make up 60% of that. This certainly won't be a popular comment but maybe it's time to start point the finger in another direction. Rather than saying it's the fault of the minority how about the majority work together to fix education, healthcare, crime, etc. Look at your public sector and demand accountability.

Oh, I got it! Maybe I should have said I didn't get O level American!

You're right on the sympathetic ear because people vote for those they believe have their interests in mind. Labour market themselves as inclusive. A labour MP with a religious bias is a bonus. Where I live you'd struggle to run if you're not a white mormon and while there is a separation of church and state it's a blurry line when the majority of politicians belong to the same church.

Just as an aside, during Obama's first campaign, I remember a TV vox pop interview, where a woman said she wouldn't vote for him because, at the end of one of his speeches, "he didn't say God Bless America" ! I was dumbstruck !

Yep. There isn't a single atheist in Congress. Eight states have specific laws that bar atheists from public office entirely.

That is truly extraordinary, Chris !

So, I could have an extraordinary political mind and offer policies that would solve all of society's problems - (a bit of a stretch, I know !) - but if I owned up to being an atheist, no-one would ever get to hear them ? Wow !

There must be a good number of public officials who ARE atheist, but daren't admit it, though ?

Tennessee's Article 9 reads "No person who denies the being of God, or a future state of rewards and punishments, shall hold any office in the civil department of this state."

Arkansas' Article 19 reads "No person who denies the being of a God shall hold any office in the civil departments of this State, nor be competent to testify as a witness in any Court." which the way I read it says your testimony is inadmissible in court also!

I'm sure there are many that are atheist or agnostic but simply won't admit it for the sake of their careers. George Washington was believed to be a deist but the argument still rages today as to whether that's true as it's something he didn't discuss much during his life.

They arnt atheists then as isn't there a vow to take .

There is a swearing-in ceremony but I don't know how it varies from state to state.

Federally you don't have to pledge allegiance to any religion but most won't discuss it because it's a vote killer. There are more out homosexuals in American politics than atheists.

In fairness mate the SCOTUS ruled it unconstitutional. As Chris says, it's not so much legal as cultural. That law wouldn't stand in court but it does illustrate how important religion is to the US electorate.

So it's not illegal  be an atheist, but it's not legal ?

It's legal you just can't hold public office in Arkansas as someone who denies the existence of god, heaven, or hell. Like Born said it's unconstitutional but they want that theocratic distinction in their state's constitution.

A lot of it stems from the public push for christianity during the cold war. In god we trust went on the money. References went into the pledge of allegiance. Atheism was for commies. Even today you'll struggle to find an openly atheist politician this side of the Atlantic. I'm sure that many privately couldn't care less but to say it out loud could potentially upset a lot of your constituents.
