Had a bit of time to kill when i was in town.So went into the commando muesum. Very interesting gave a history of the origins and plenty gear in display cases. The Thompson machine gun looks really cool and im not really into guns, but that would look cool mounted on the wall lol

 

medals, daggers, grenades pistols etc. I didn't have a camera with me but next time im in town i will go back in and take a few pics.There was also a taxidermist bit with lots of animals pine martins, ravens and pride of place was a Golden eagle. Looked stunning!

 

Went into another room and it was like stepping back in time. A big dark table in middle of room with two holes and straps . Reading the description it was a birching table with the birch switch on top of it. A 12 year old lad who was caught breaking into a shop was the last one on that particular table to be punished.

 

Ironically a school kids tour was in aswell with there teachers lol Barbaric was her reply to the kids. I was gonna say " a few kids these days would do well to get tnis" but i refrained haha she looked the sort who wouldn't agree.

No its in fort william town centre mate. Didnt know it was there myself lol saw a bunting thing on the steet.

Free entry but i stuck a fiver in the donation box.

 

@wilf yea me to mate. Find that stuff fascinating. The bren gun on show must have been a c**t to lug around.

cases filled with stuff and about 7rooms. Top floor was really old jacobite stuff.

 

oh in the room with the Eagle and a huge f***ing swan there was cases of eggs from wrens to eagles.

One of the wee kids was asking his teacher lots of questions. Really interested he was.asked her where they got them.

 

"Bad men took them and killed the babies" WTF! Number one they arent babies.2 The kids probably had eggs for breakfast.

and jack the ripper osama bin laden were bad men. No wonder kids grow up ignorant!

You mentioned the birching table, an old boy who I knew years ago and was a jock as it happens.....great character.......he got the cat o nine tails in the nick.

He also made a living as a booth boxer in his younger days.......one tough old b*****d.

I lifted the switch of birches and that would f***ing hurt a grown man never mind a child! It did say a Dr was always present during a birching lol

Nah some practices are best left in the past.

Wonder if the parents were allowed to witness it? Prob not i defy any parent to stand and watch that.

I'm sure here (Isle of man ) was last place you could be birched in the uk , I do know a few who where sentenced to death , judge actually had the black cap placed on his head before he passed sentence as was the tradition (1980s , 1990s) the sentence was always over-ruled by the Uk Home Secretary , pity they didn't carry it out on a couple of the Wankers I knew , http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/manx-court-sentences-man-to-be-hanged-1532599.html . Found Churchills war rooms by chance just round the corner from Downing St , found it absolutely fascinating !!
