Minkenry 1,044
Hello everyone! I had a REALLY exciting hunt last weekend! There are times when hunting with a mink that all of the action happens underground or in thick brush, so you don't get to see much of anything. There are other times like this video when you get to see quite the spectacular scene!!! https://youtu.be/GUFlZAYd8TQ I also got pretty busy and forgot to share this video from a couple weeks ago. This video shows my mink Rio and pointer lurcher Onsa doing a bit of ratting in a chicken coop..... https://youtu.be/OUGa3Jl0SwY Edited March 14, 2017 by Minkenry 7 Quote Link to post

Minkenry 1,044
Here's a cool story, and some pictures of a night I REALLY WISH we would have caught on film! We went out lamping muskrat one night, and we caught a total of 6 muskrats, two brown rats, and a carp. And most of that was caught by my lurcher..... INCLUDING THE CARP!!! The mink was flushing muskrats and brown rats into the water, and the lurcher was diving in and catching them. After having caught a fair number, we came upon a carp in the stream and we were shining it with the light. All of a sudden my lurcher jumped in and caught the fish! It was something I would have LOVED to catch on film!!! Here is my lurcher Onsa with the carp she dove in and caught. Here's the catch for the night, minus a brown rat the mink caught. I'm hoping to do some lamping for jackrabbits and foxes with her this spring and summer when we are going out to hunt kangaroo rats in the desert. Quote Link to post

Haiddheliwr 1,911
Another couple of amazing videos! I love the way you tell Onsa to stay out of it and she does lol. Is it it your better half doing the camera work? I have my missus on occasion using the lamp for me and she is getting really good at it (wouldn't tell her though lol) Keep the vids coming really look forward to them. ATB Quote Link to post

Strap a go pro to your dogs head . See what footage you get . If the mink is doing all the work the dog seems pretty chilled Quote Link to post
Minkenry 1,044
the mink is a smashing worker do you think he could of been trained to work with a hawk, the same as hawks an ferrets work in the uk It would be very tricky and dangerous! Unlike a sleepy ferret, mink actually bolt after the rabbits they flush, that is assuming they don't catch the rabbit underground, which they are quite good at. This would put the mink in close proximity to the hawk if it does catch the rabbit. This would be quite dangerous for the hawk and mink both! Ferrets are much better at flushing than mink are because they are very slow and have very low level prey drive (when compared to wild members of the weasel family). Fast, powerful, and driven animals don't work very well as a flusher because they're too busy catching stuff. It would be a bit like trying to use a pit bull or a grey hound to try and herd sheep. You'd just end up with a bunch of dead or injured sheep. It's much better to use a collie that has enough prey drive to keep them interested in the sheep, but not so much that they are obsessed with killing the sheep. The same goes for bolting rabbits. It's much better to use a ferret to bolt because just like a collie they have just enough prey drive to nip and chase and drive the rabbit out of its warren, but not so much that it's putting it's all into killing every rabbit it comes across. Casso 1,264
That's an interesting point you make about the collie pit/greyhound comparison My reading of their possible interaction with sheep goes along the lines of , at which point do instincts kick in for each canine, instincts kick in when social breaks down which is the same as a dog being overwhelmed by stimulation but instead of the collie breaking down into instinctive reactions he can take his drive to the next level and can hold both handler and sheep in the same frame of mind He can take direction while in a highly emotion state , whereas most other breeds crash in such a charged state and revert to nstincts , That's also why I'm impressed with the mink handling and the interaction between instincts and social in dealing with the mink , can you handle him while highly charged ? Or maybe by the time he starts working you have already generated a very social bond Quote Link to post
