Jonjon79 13,358
Little 'un wanted to use her rifle during half term so, as I've now got a small collection of good permissions, I suggested we go hunting and, she leapt at the chance Because of school, various clubs and my work schedule, she hasn't practiced much lately so, on Wednesday, we headed off to Black Cat HFT. It was a good afternoon - she spent some time on the plinking range then, I moved her onto the HFT lanes. Her Goldstar se is still a little long and front heavy for her to follow proper HFT rules so, she took most of her shots off the bipod. The funny thing is, she's right handed but, left eye dominant and, until very recently, she's always shot right hand/left eye. But on Wednesday, out of the blue, she's shooting left hand/left eye and, hitting most of what she aims at. She did so well on the HFT course that I started dragging the mat further back through the trees. Her longest shot of the day was around 45yrds. I think her set up really works for her - BSA Goldstar se .177, MTC Genesis UL 3-9x40 and JSB RS for a nice flat trajectory After seeing her focus and enjoy it so much, and watching her accuracy, I though 'That'll do' so, we made plans to go hunting. Last night we went to the manor house permission. I did consider the new pig farm but, there's very few places to rest a rifle and, we haven't done a lot of work on close range holdover yet. I wasn't sure how she'd react to rat shooting - killing pests as opposed to taking rabbits for food. It turned out that she's fine with it We had a look at the grain silos for a while but, there was nothing moving. Then we headed through the orchard to the 2 big chicken houses. We set her rifle on the bipod, on a plastic crate so that she had a clear view of the rat holes along the side. Within a couple of minutes 2 rats came along, running alongside the bottom edge. She put the crosshairs on one of their heads when it stopped to sniff and, fired. She hit it right and the sound was good. It lay still for a couple of seconds then started twiching about and disappeared under the chicken shed. She was please with her first rat shot - 'Did you see that dad' We waited a few more minutes, then the other one poked it's head out. She took the shot but, missed and hit the bottom frame of the shed. The ran out, straight into the overgrown brambles behind. We changed position to look into the brambles. There were definitely rats in there but, they were in quite deep and, difficult to get a good line on. We played a waiting game and, eventually some did pause in a good area for a clean shot. She managed to shoot 3 more in there. All in all, she had a good night - she fired 5 shots and killed 4 rats. It's just a shame that there's no pictures from last night and none of the rats were retrievable. She couldn't wait to tell her mum all about it when we got home. It also turns out that she really likes HFT 11 Quote Link to post

Jonjon79 13,358
nice to see a girl enjoying the sport mate My thoughts exactly mate I don't ever remember seeing any women or kids at the club that I used to go to. The mix at Black Cat is better but, it'd always be nice to see more Quote Link to post
Jonjon79 13,358
Far better than sitting in front of the tellyDefinitely mate. The trouble is, I think that a lot of kids just haven't been shown any better. I've offered to take a couple of my daughters mates to the club - out in the woods and the fresh air for a few hours. They'd see squirrels, rabbits and pheasants but, their parents don't want them playing with nasty guns. Quote Link to post

philpot 5,115
Both my girls loved to come fishing with me and I loved taking them, my youngest, now 20, still enjoys a fishing session and has taken a shine to my semi auto 12gauge shotgun and has the eye for clay shooting. My son, now 44, loved the air rifle, his pride and joy was a little Diana break barrel .177 that he shot thousands of rounds in our cellar shooting range. We used to hang empty 12gauge cartridges on fishing line. Good times. Phil 1 Quote Link to post
