Stock Stippling

Recommended Posts

Now that my FAC ticket has arrived :boogy: I can pick up my Rapid Mk2 and linked to the fact that Mac has got me going on sorting my TX stock out, a few thoughts have been running through my head (as they often do).

If I can recall, the stock on the Rapid has no checkering so I thought about having stippling on the pistol grip and part of the forend BUT how to do it. I pulled a piece of red cedar from the garage just to try a few punches out to see what they looked like. Does anybody know what tool is used to produce the stippling effect (same as one of Sean's Rapids that have been shown in some recent photo's) and where I could get one.

P1ssing about results which clearly nowhere near good enough, just a simple test.

I have the time to do a job like this but admit I would like to get hold of a fcuked stock to practice on when I have the right tool.

I also fancy asking Nath to buy a bit of his green colour stain that I have seen in a few photo's of his work.

Your thoughts please gentlemen.

Just been looking on youtube and the internet generally and it would seem that both the hammer/punch method and a dremmel/engraving tool are used for this type of work. Well I have a dremmel so I am going to buy a few tool points and give it a whirl on scrap I hasten to add before I even think of trying on the Rapid stock.

Do you have a small amount of travel on your air hacksaw Sean because my normal Makita hacksaw has quite a long blade travel which I am guessing would make it very tricky to get your results.

I used a Dremel with that engraving attachment when I made a stock for my old Matador.

If you steady it with both hands and, kind of dab with it, side on, it makes fairly neat round dimples.

It's not unlike the texture on a golf ball, but on a smaller scale.

Ive just done my hw97 stock, i used a 6 inch nail slightly blunted by hitting on concrete. And another nail shaped down on a 30° angle for the border it worked really well, it was more of a pain oiling and waxing it.

Plus put something on your thumb...

Let us have a look at the results
