Nice work again mac that was a suprising trick!

It is Tom some thing Viz showed me he is a joiner and wood craftsman nothing he dose not know about wood

and he over see,s every stock i do and if its not right i have to do it again lol

in fact his fav,,,saying is WHEN YOU THINK ITS DONE DO IT AGAIN

with out his knowledge i would not do them learn,t a lot off him over the years we have been friends we are like brothers

nothing we would not do for each other .

right thats enough of the soppy part lol

this tx is a naturally dark wood and the darkness runs all the way thro the wood all your trying to do is lighten it

it will not lighten by sanding it as say,d the darkness runs thro the wood

the secret is in the oil no color the stock will still go dark when the oil is put on but not as much as before and as the grain is darker it will stand out more than before

When you put it in the bath all your trying to achieve is the removal of the old oil ALL OF IT or you will have darker patches if its not .

this only works with walnut wood that has had oil applied to it and not beech as beech stocks have laquer on them

when i put a beech stock in the bath i remove all the laquer and sand down to bear wood then place in the soapy water to make the grain pop so when you apply the stain to the beech stock the grain stands out more than before

this only works once ,,,as when the grain has popped it will not pop any more than it has all ready .

If you look back in the photos Mac I`ve found out why the stock was so sticky part way through your procedure, - you put Orange marmalade on her yer daft unct.

Just bought some 0000 wire wool.

Now the tung oil, I guess a 250ml bottle is more than enough, is there any particular brand better than others, Liberon, Rustins and Bestwood brands are on ebay, are any of these any good.

Forgive my ignorance Jimmy but what is the difference between Tung oil and linseed oil.

This is the one i use Phil

I dont like the linseed oil its a bitch to get back out when you need to

and i find that when the stock gets wet ie,,rain .. you end up with gray patches on the stock
