One For The Tech Heads

Recommended Posts

I tried out my wife's Brocock .22 with the red lamp last week, nothing doing but just thought I would have one or two shots under red light to see how accurate the gun and myself was. I saw the pellet over a 40mt (ish) was spiraling rather than a straight path. A few more shots, all the same which would explain why the flyers on the range.

I popped into the RFD today and asked him and an old chap, well in his eighties said 'head size mate'. if the head is loose, it will spiral, then he and his dog left, he is said to be a bit of a guru with air guns and everything to do with them so I take it as read that is the cause.

Now the pellets were AA Field 5.52mm which I bought 1000 at the time of buying the gun.

So any ideas chaps

Nice one Phil, Jonnie,

That was the video I was trying to refer to.

I think I was carrying the wrong info on suggesting .177 cal best at higher power though , I should have said .22 ( senior moment eh :icon_redface:)

I was trying to put across that a "well placed" 812 ft/sec sub 12 ft/lbs .177, would do the same job as a 900 ft/sec fac .22 and that " shot placement" trumps power ( along those lines lads)

Anyways, atb

Sorry lads didn't realise that had been covered in another thread. It's interesting though, I've noticed a few references about for speed and barrel twist, seems the usual airgun twist ratio is best around 900fps, creates a more stable pellet. One of those things that would need uber testing to get any real proof from.

I guessed that was the vid you were talking about mate.

But what about my pellet issue boys, come on Mac, Mitch, Simon, David, Mark and any other boffins..........................ideas ideas ideas boys.

I should say the gun has been chrono checked at 11.6fps on two machines

Yes I have to do that and I am taking off the mod just in case I am getting interference / clipping although I doubt it as it is almost silent and I think you would hear a clicking sound.

I was going buy some FAP but at this moment, until I establish what the cause is, I don't want to splash on tins upon tins of pellets as the AA Field may not be the issue. Could anyone send me a handful of .22 FAP to test please.

To be honest I'm a little confused by the OP and some responses!

Have you tried the 5.51 AA Field (I think I am right in saying they packed up the 5.50 some years ago)

Have you tried other pellets?

Have you resolved the problem yet?

Cheers

Not tried 5.51 Deker and to be honest, I am not a lover of AA Fields it was simply a case that the RFD chucked a couple of tins of 5.52 in on the deal for my other half. I was not bothered as I was not using the gun, my wife is.

What part are you confused about Deker, I am an East Coast boy so perhaps my description of the issue was not very clear..........sorry.

If you are running .22 under 12ft lb, I'm not sure what an overpowered .177 has got to do with the issue?

I would suspect, just the same, the problem is pellet related, but taking the mod off and checking the crown are sensible steps.

As a side issue, I quite rate the AA Field but my FAC Falcon prefers the 5.51 to the 5.52.

As say,d phil head size mate

if the pellet is not sitting right and when sent on its way the pellet is not spinning in the barrel IE,,its wobbling and the rifling is not doing its job

the rifling is there to spin the pellet if the head and skirt is not sitting on the rifling it will not spin as should so your not getting the full benefit of the rifling

try another head size or a few head sizes until you find one that fits good

Cheers Mac, I will get some different pellets to try.

Deker the over powered situation is not my rifle but an identical situation shown on the vid link with 'Teds Holdover' which was an over powered HW .177 FAC and was given as an illustration to the pellet flight path, not the same problem, I see the confusion as we were talking about the same link on another thread so perhaps it seemed to be offered as THE problem but that was not the case here.
