A Few Trips Out

Recommended Posts

I'll keep this brief and apologise for no photos this time (I know how much you appreciate them).

Well tried a bit of decoying but the pigeons were not around. First tried a planted field where we had 13 a few weeks back but there was just nothing around. Gave it till midday then decided to up sticks and try our own bit of land which is natural organic pasture so the clover may bring them in. Set up under our oak tree with the usual brolly hide and put out the deeks. Well it was very slow with just two to show for our afternoon efforts and one rabbit taken at 58 yds with a clean headshot. Unfortunately all the pigeons were coming in and using the oak tree as a sitty tree so next time I'll make a natural hide away from the base to have a crack at them.

Then a short session of an hour up in the copse saw three rabbits shot plus one missed pigeon and jay due to hitting twigs. Still sitting up in a little copse on a warm spring evening has to be one of nicest and most relaxing ways to spend some time away from the stresses of work and 12 hour shifts.

Then yesterday a call from a neighbour for us to go up and try to sort out some rabbits on a horse paddock up the road. He would cover the majority of the field with his HMR and I'd take the top of the field and target them near the road. Started just after seven and went through till the light had gone. I managed six rabbits within a forty yard area where I was lying prone whilst he took ten plus a magpie with the HMR. It was impressive to watch from where I was shooting as to the efficiency of the HMR. The crack of the shots was loud enough but also the thwack as they hit their target was very impressive and these were shots of over 100 yds in some cases, the magpie got pillow cased.

Two small rabbits and one wrecked one by the HMR went to the ferrets and the rest to the butchers.

Going to have a go with the HMR next time but I still think I'll prefer the quietness of the S410 and the need to get within range as more of a challenge.
