Labs And Water .?

Recommended Posts

do any labs/ springers (not) like water ,? was talking to a woman today who 2 labs bitches were swimming in the pool by me. Both loved i, but she said some dont like going in water, i was surprised as i thought like retrieving it was natural to the breed as the same with springers . But suppose all dogs are differnt, my 2 dogs(lurchers) not water dogs, they only go in if there feet on the floor bloody wimps lol .

when i was a kid there was a bloke in the gun club whos lab wouldnt go in after a shot duck,it just winged and stood on the bank, later that day we were crossing over a canal along a field drainage pipe and my old man gave the dog a nudge straight off the pipe into the middle of the canal, guess he thought kill or cure and do the owner a favour lol.

dog swam about for few minutes after surfacing lol,and ran up the bank, later that day launched itself into the canal to pick another shot duck never hesitated again.

this isnt something id advise obviously.

My young lab couldn't bloody swim , loved going in , thrashed the water to a foam but useless , it got its self in proper trouble when it was about a year old that ended up with me going in to save it ..This is January , I'm in jeans , wellies fleese woolly hat, phone in the pocket , fat and 60+ and in the river getting her out ..just about got myself out ...the stupid dog wants to go back in ..Anyway found someone who teaches dogs to swim , apparently lots of dogs can't swim , even Labs ..within an hour she had it swimming properly using all the legs in the right order .loves water and fair glides through it now .Had her picking up on a couple of duck days last season and she was superb given they were her first days at retrieving having only used her on deer ..

That made me laugh, I could just picture you going in after the dog, bet you looked a right sight !

Although I nearly had to go in the river after my Dane x mastiff when she decided she could run across water after the swans, sunk like a stone, I thought she wasn't coming back up so I was just starting to strip off when she surfaced a bit sorry for herself.

She hates water, always has done, won't even go out for a piss if it's raining, slowly, very slowly she is getting better, never had a problem with my labs though, it's more work trying to keep them out !
