Pre myxy most farms and estates had full time rabbit catchers, which used gin traps by the million which would of kept the fox levels very low.the fox will eat such a variety of food from beetles fruit

They will have to pack their bags and move to town. Seriously though, any wild animal will find their own population levels depending on the food available. There is no such thing as a stable populati

The whole reason the red fox thrived in Australia and became such a pest was because he found the slow moving Marsupials easy to catch, that and some flightless species of bird. When the rabbit was in

King I am willing to stand corrected but I think the European fox Vulpes vulpes was introduced to Australia in 1833 by which time there was already a plague of rabbit as they had been introduced in 1788 and had bred like rabbits. So from the off I would have said there would have been plenty for them to eat. When mixie was introduced in the 1950's I would have thought that there would have been a big population crash of the red fox. Perhaps one of our Australian members can give us more info?

TC[/quote I think the fox population went crazy as well when the settlers introduced them for hunting can't remember the correct amount I know the number brought over and released was not to many and there's millions of them now

As far as I'm aware, foxes in Australia had turned their attention to slower native critters long before the rabbits numbers dropped through myxy. Which is why foxes have been so successful and many native species are in decline.

I also think there's a link between the spread of myxy in this country and a high buzzard population,

ie. bird feeds on a myxy rabbit in the morning and by nightfall the fleas could be in the next county.

Could explain why it first appears in the middle of good rabbit ground.
