Anybody having any luck for the mackerel in Northern Ireland around Kilkeel, Ardglass etc was very late last year before they were in

Possibly. They usually move up the coast but where I fish for them on the Louth coast there's a lot of seals and the boats are often catching them a month before the anglers are.

A couple of friends always tell me that from the trawlers a mile out they just see a line of seals keeping everything away.

yes Francie and love eating them nothing finer than just caught mackerel, I love them done in the wok with sugar, soy and onions, they work well with oriental flavours too, Hot smoked mackerel salad, flake the mackerel into a bowl, with chopped cherry tomatoes finely diced red onion and freshly chopped parsley, with a drizzle of olive oil and salt n pepper to season, on fresh toasted crusty. Beautiful

Agreed, fresh mackerel is up there with the finest. Kills me when I see lads only catching them for bait.

i keep the joeys fir winter piking, but only keep as much as il eat, the rest get thrown back, can't wait til were getting them from the shore

For mackerel I always use feathers and instead of a weight at the bottom I use a heavy Koster or German Spratt as you might pick up another mackerel or even a bass.

When I hear that the trawlers have had a few mackerel a mile or two out I try and get down soon after on an early high tide and try and get as many as possible because when the mackerel are in proper then the crowds appear and you'll have no peace.

Where I fish for mackerel they tend to be small to medium size, yet, a couple of miles South I fish an estuary for bass and the odd mackerel I catch there tend to be big.

Last year of the Louth coast the mackerel never really showed and the year before it was nearly September and by then the rods are put away.
