tillylamp 1,960 Posted March 20, 2016 Author Report Share Posted March 20, 2016 Im not a fan of the big yank tanks myself but i must admit i do love the sound of a big lazy v8 an old boy who lives a few miles from me collects them he,s doing a rat rod project at the moment a 1930,s Ford Model A its in a thousand pieces at the moment but every time i pass by he gives me the old " look worse before it looks better " statement ......i drove a big Pontiac Firebird thing around for a few weeks as a youngster ended up taking out a telephone box the back end just slid out was lucky i didnt kill anyone....it was a left hooker and worthless by the time id finished with it but some piece of machinery......i like a bit more of a refined motor these days but i never get tired of hearing that deep aggressive rumbling of a Mustang or Chevy. yeah mate there not everyone's cup of tea, but you described it perfectly about that deep aggressive rumble for me, the guy near you doing a rat rod should end up looking pretty impressive you will hear it before you see it.....lol they have custom shows here in the local pub car park, and you wonna see the time, effort and money that goes into them, its outstanding what they end up looking like, and when it comes time for them to leave and they start, starting there engines, its like a massive rumbling under your feet, that v8 heavenly sound. Absolutely.....i drive a v8 today but its nothing like the old Ford or Rover v8,s of years ago i remember on tickover they always felt like they was going to stall like i say they was big lazy engines that you had to virtually stamp the pedal through the floor to get it to move they had a loose feeling about them whereas my one now is tight and responsive yet ten times faster technology stands still for nobody but its still great sometimes to get back to basics and that concentrated fear/fun feeling you used to get from those big nasty sounding engines is a great driving experience in my opinion. i'm impressed gnasher, you described the old v8's so well,funnily enough, my mates got an old 50's or 60's chevy v8 and its exactly as you say, lazy, it sounds like it skips a beat on tick over....lol what v8 do you drive now mate? when i left there to come here,there was a guy working on an older mg, he put a range rover 4.3 (i think it was) v8 in it but i never did get to see the finished out come,but its probably safe to say it sounded and performed like a brute...lol he was going to race it, iv'e got the modern v8 2012 dodge ram 1500 sport 5.7 hemi which is pretty quick off the mark, around 400bhp, which isn't bad as it weighs two and a half ton lol Dodge Ram thats them massive great big things i think id whack into everything driving one of them......i like the power of them a fella i know has one of the big v10 8 litre jobs i cant get the A - Team out of my mind whenever i see it mine is an Italian job with the F136 v8 i think its about 470 bhp at 4.7 litre ive driven a lot of fast cars over the years and they all have their good and bad points what i like about this one is the balance of the performance its more electronic power than the sheer brute force mechanical power of your Dodge....its all singing all dancing 4 mode gearbox,paddle shifters etc etc theres buttons i dont even know what they do but its certainly not blisteringly fast more of a gentlemans boy racer type thing i suppose !........i just love cars mate ive got a few others here you would probably like if your ever round the London/Essex borders you,ll have to stop by its always good chatting with folk with common interests sounds like an impressive luxury car you have there gnash, with all that Italian flare and its big engine......nice....lol.....i like your style.....lol......does it come with an Italian woman in the passenger seat.. a guy here i know has one of them big v10 8.3 litre dodges, its the SRT-10 model with the dodge viper engine, he is pretty loaded with money and loves his toys,its got the windows blacked out,and been lowered a bit more, it does look pretty smart, standard they are 500 bhp,and standard 0-60 is 5.4sec, ford also did a pretty nifty truck also, it was the F-150 SVT Lightning, although it was only 380bhp it was supercharged and was a bit quicker than the dodge, standard 0-60 5.2sec, but not top end speed, but in all, these times are pretty impressive as they are just a pickup trucks, iv'e always just loved big cars, fast cars, big engines,hot rods, fast motorbikes, any thing with a decent engine, big bhp, and good looks really, i would be interested in seeing the others you have there mate, i'm intrigued now.....lol....so if i was to get back home and i had to go up your neck of the woods i would defiantly give you a shout for a cuppa and a peek at your other toys, My son imports Japanese cars Skylines/Imprezzas etc he had a Supra they took up to about 800 bhp he ended up in the 200 mph club with it you get sent out a number plate and certificate etc bit of a gimmick really but its some machine he took it down the strip at Santa Pod it went over the line a fraction under 10 seconds at about 155 mph it scares the shit out of me i wont even get in it anymore i love speed but im not going to die for it ......i love Italian cars they have a class and quality about them i think....not the muggy Ferraris and Lambos im too big and clumsy to fit in them....and no you can keep the women as well come to think about it ! One of my mates sons is into all those tuned up Jap imports, he's got some scary fast Skyline GT-R think it's 900bhp. All I know is riding in it is like taking a dose of most powerful laxative in the world definitely not for me these days. the skyline was always a favorite car for people to add bigger horse power to, it already had a good hp to start with, but 900 bhp is impressive...shit yourself did ya... lol the GT-R is a lovely looking car, standard at 550 bhp, although it had a 3.8 v6 it also come with twin turbos, it was a pretty quick car, 0-60 in just under 3 sec..wow, 1 Quote Link to post Share on other sites

tillylamp 1,960 Posted March 20, 2016 Author Report Share Posted March 20, 2016 I have no interest at all in cars or anything mechanical ,I only started reading this thread to see what a ratrod was ,but listening to enthusiasts is infectious ,I have found myself googli g cars mentioned on here .good reading chaps . a rat rod started off as a cheaper version to the hot rod,more of an every day car rather than a garaged hot rod,it was mainly 1920's to early 60's cars because they had already fewer panels,wings, bonnet and other parts, were as the hot rod is scored by every thing being spot on, the rat rod can have bits missing,a few dents, a bit of rust, but a nice engine, but nowadays they have made the old rat rods look like new rat rods, which i also like, another car for you to google mate, is the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1,(my favorite) these are what we call muscle cars, along with the ford mustang, dodge charger, dodge challenger, i really like all these as well,there's some beauties here, Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Dont take this as faultless as it was a while ago now but i bought an Italian car from an American a few years back so looked into it all and im sure the standard car rate is 10% import duty and 20% vat but only on the price of the car you dont pay duty on the shipping though you do pay vat on it.....the car i bought was classed as vintage and so is imported not as a vehicle but as a " collectors item " similar to if you was importing an antique or a painting.....and so qualified for zero import duty and a reduced rate of vat 5% i think it was......so if its a 1950,s truck you would do the same as i think it was vehicles of 40 years and older. You could probably get in touch with the Federation of British HIstoric Vehicle Clubs i would think they could put you straight Quote Link to post Share on other sites

South hams hunter 8,996 Posted March 20, 2016 Report Share Posted March 20, 2016 https://m.youtube.com/results?q=v8%20humbre%20septre&sm=3 thats what my father in law has in his septre Thats a good little project he,s done there i love seeing old motors livened up like that it sounds like he,s put a Rover v8 in it have you got any idea what gearbox he matched it up to ?.....im no mechanic but as youngsters we put a rover v8 in a mark 1 Escort i remember the biggest problem we had was the gearbox ended up with a sd1 if i remember right that was back in the days when anyone could pick up a spanner and mess about with an engine nowadays i dont even bother lifting the bonnet i wouldnt have a clue what im looking at any more. its still got its original box in it gnasher, he's got a 5.2 lump to go in it next. He lives for his humbre and tbh that at 70+ is more of an adrenaline ride then audis or bmws doing a ton 20.
