Dog Could Be A "jaffa"

as a couple of you on here know I have been planning to take a litter off my old dog "patch" to a bitch of similar breeding I have. but after patchy seeming to "miss" a couple of bitches I thought I had better get him checked over and the vet seems to think his sperm count is very low!! im waiting on some more tests, but im gutted to say the least as I don't breed very often, only when I need a pup back for myself.

 

I had planned with this litter to gift a couple of pups to likely men who I knew would graft the line and do them justice. a risk in itself but then life is all about risk although any potential home would be asked the relevant questions and intentions and after that its in the hands of the gods so to speak.

 

all may not be lost as I do have an insurance policy of sorts, a dog with similar credentials and working style, and has been responsible for the similar amount of graft but "patch" just had the edge in regards to the making it look easy front!

 

but time will tell

If it was a good litter then maybe he has a good brother worth trying ?

I wouldn't breed from a dog anyway unless some of the siblings were of a high standard also and although it's nice to breed from your own dog his brother is the next best thing.

Tis a bummer when your heart is set on a particular union that ain't happening .A low sperm count is not the end mind mate (was going to write ask fireman but better not lol).Rather than letting the dog mate once or twice a day under supervision as we all like ,kennel the two together .They will couple more than we think is necessary and fresh sperm is always more vibrant .Allow the dog to cover her whenever she allows ,normally over a 3 -4 day period .How old is he mate?.

Some well known lines have been led to ruination by breeding towards the bitch side mate rather than the dog that created her .Some will undoubtedly dispute it but its the dog that keeps up the work ethic .

A decent bitch is a decent producer but keep looking to her and the line will fade .

FD that's a very short sighted view, for me it's the bitch that's everything, without them your on a slippery slope. Granted dogs are by their very nature more masculine but if your bitches aren't right then why breed from them. The bitch is the yard stick of any man's yard, if your bitches are working as hard and as good as your dogs your getting it right.

Keeping a strong bitch line is what's worked for me over the years and I know of others who think the same.

IMO there's no room in breeding terriers for making allowances for bitches.

But, as FD says, when it comes to the actually breeding the choice of dog is very important............too.

I took it for granted you lads would know any bitch has to be doing it right BUT not only does it have to be working but it has to of produced workers .There's no shortcut to this but many have tried .In my opinion and only mine Nick Stevens was a classic example of looking to a bitch for longevity but IMO he failed .Bear with me .NS liked a bolter type and bred to these types to produce same ,saw it with my own eyes .Just before he jacked it all IMO his line was going downhill fast and it was only the foresight of others introducing harder types via a dog that resurrected what there is today .I've seen failing lines pepped up via the use of a dog of strong type .In my experience, and not hearsay, if your using a hard dog over bayer mixer bitches you won't go wrong .There are of course hard bitches within every line but these went created by using a lesser dog .
