matt1979 766
Had the young pup out on the lamp again earlier just training him up on the lamp really only been out half a dozen times on the lamp and had about 3 or four slips to date not quiet got the jist of following the beam but keen enough. Went over to a local spot where he has run before as the weather was decent for the lamp. First field nothing about but he was showing some interest headed over the brow of the hill and few bunnies sitting close to hedge couldn't get close enough to get a decent slip though as tempting as it was Doubled back around the field and couple of bunnies sitting out a bit from hedge so slipped him and he clocked them pretty quick and put the burners on about 10 yards from rabbit small dip in the ground sent him Cartwheeling into the air felt like slow mo and I was thinking the worst but he was straight back up and on with the run but rabbit made it to the hedge, back he came none the worse for his acrobatics. Decided to head to a new spot just a fields away and in fairness it was heaving with rabbits but getting a decent slip tough for a young dog. Got to bottom corner of field there was one sitting out a little which we managed to get a slip on pup beat it to the hedge but over shot big time and rabbit was looking favourite to make it to hedge, but he put his foot down and managed another turn. Same issue though overshot the mark and rabbit lived to run another day. Thiught that would do for one night with youngster but Managed to get a squater on the way back to car but in truth being a novice he didn't have a clue until we practically trod on it. Again he turned rabbit and it ended up doing a somersault into the hedge as he made a a last gasp but unsuccessful strike. Downs were the pup blanked again but to be honest I couldn't really fault him no doubt an older dog would have had a couple. But pluses were he is as keen as mustard, he has plenty of pace to turn them (perhaps too much) and he seems to naturally try an cut then off from hedges. A quick whistle and he comes straight back as well which is in my eyes at least pretty good for a keen youngster. Never thought any dog would oust my little terrier as my fav but he is doing his best, been an absolute pleasure to own from day one really and we seem to have a cracking bond, hopefully have a rabbit our two to show for his efforts soon happy hunting Edited December 5, 2015 by matt1979 8 Quote Link to post
TOM HEAVY 140
am sure a lot of folk will relate to that mate, overshooting, typical in a young keen pup, like u say tho at least he's coming back in off the lamp looks a nice type that, how's he bred?? Quote Link to post

matt1979 766
All my dogs are insured for a few quid a month seems daft not to. I don't buy into all this some dogs break easier than others though, no question their are more durable types of lurchers about and speed is dangerous, but any type of running dog can and do have injuries. A lot of it is down to luck in my eyes and perhaps secondly the land you hunt. At the end of the day when you slip any running dog you take a risk and any runner hitting something hard and full pelt is in trouble atb Edited December 6, 2015 by matt1979 1 Quote Link to post
General lee 979
My pups doing the same I've took him out a few times only slipped him 4 times he flys up the beam which is good just need to get him to slow down so he doesn't overshoot the squatters he comes straight back once the beam is off he's just being a pup flat out straight away when the rabbit turns he's going to fast to turn hopefully it will click and he will slow down a bit Quote Link to post
terryd 8,955
Mine was the same Matt a few months ago missing loads and I was worried he might lose enthusiasm (yea right ). I made a big effort to position him better or best I could on his runs and he started catching on and now he don't miss much. Quote Link to post

lurchers 2,996
If he is a young dog he will learn to paise himself with experience as he will want to be 100miles an hour on everything until the penny drops and learns things do twist and turn.he will get there mate just give him time and the work atb Quote Link to post
matt1979 766
Well done he will settle down. How old His is just gone 10 month so only a pup, he has filled out a little over last two months but is still 22tts. He is pretty switched on for a youngster though and been tagging along in the day time with more experienced dogs since about 5 month old. Some will say too young I know, but other than the odd accident he hasn't really run anything much in the day, just mooched about and enjoyed himself Quote Link to post
