swg dave 334
Lamping, Coursing, Bushing, Retrieving to hand fur on lamp, and feather from water. Not saying all do the above, but over my lifetime i have seen some very handy mutts that deserve that special name,,, THE LURCHER,, best of the working breed by a mile. I have even seen Bedlington X Whippets try and go to ground before the ban. I was introduced to lamping at a mere 11 years of age, i have owned some really good, and some not so good over the years in all honesty, Lurcher,s that is,,, but i have always looked on the lurcher as a bit mystical, special. After all the old lurcher dog or bitch, is a good food provider and have put plenty of descent meals on my table over the years. For those of us that own a lurcher, what great companions and friends they really are, a dog of such pleasure to own,, and I am so happy since a friend introduced me to lamping and the lurcher world. I raise my glass of Black Sheep Ale to my friend John of 40 Years, Thank you John and thank you for whatever cross it may be,,, Thank you for that dog that i am so proud to own and that dog, my dogs ARE LURCHER,S.. Cheers SWG DAVE..... 9 Quote Link to post

swg dave 334
It will be great for some pitch black dry windy nights, for me and my Lurcher dogs, to get out on the beam, i know a lot of lurcher men and ladies say about rain, me included, but on the next dry, pitch black blowy night when you go lamping i bet you have a goodun... 2 Quote Link to post
Hunting loon 100
Yes I would agree with that although some folk look down on the lurcher as a dog of gypsys / poachers / and vagabonds etc they will never know the joys of owning this kind companion and to watch one walk down the road makes my heart leap but to watch one run make me heart burst and leap with true joy that why we can't let these pricks in power ban our sport as it not a hobby it's a way of life Edited September 16, 2015 by Hunting loon 3 Quote Link to post

flipbull 1,139
Well put Dave. They are a special breed. I had my dog in a vet last week and there is some woman and her fella in there getting there dog looked at, I was in the next sick bay and heard her and her fella going on about their dogs lines KC this and KC that, £ signs, skin complaints etc. It left me thinking she and him have been brainwashed by the KC, and thank fook I have a Lurcher, and only if they knew! Also sounded like they where gonna be planning a litter, even though cancer was rife in the parents from what I heard 1 Quote Link to post

bird 10,014
Well written Dave, to me a good lurcher is like a gun and a dog rolled into one well be honest , even though ive had lurchers for 30 years all kinds of xs, and had some good sport with them, the best type of dog ive seen was a lab x collie type dog. a bloke had it by me when I was a kid , he was suppose what you call a old type poacher, he was getting on when used have little chat with him when I was teen . he never worked in sense with fulltime job , he go around old folks houses doing there gardens , but he was right character lol . he go out with his gun 22 shoot few birds + rabbits and net few hares , he told me all this , but I did see him shoot few rabbits one morning , just leave them there dead when he got enough he just send the dog out bring them back, it was great to see it. I don't think he ever kept a lurcher = running dog, his dog were just old farm mongrel's , and he had few wooden tops (roe) hanging up in his shed , feck knows how took them , his dog wasn't lurcher fast , but wasn't slow thing either I like lurchers there great dogs healthy, cheep to buy compared to ped dog, have great temp with people and other dogs , and that bit of speed they got you can have bit of sport with them day/night. but what there been used for originally as a poacher dog , there deff other types dogs not lurchers out there that have done very similar job as poachers dog. 2 Quote Link to post

bracken boy 584
In the right hands our lurchers are our lucky winning ticket, I will never own anythink else, from a pot catching speed machine to a sleepy dozy companion around the house. 2 Quote Link to post
Gareth12 225
They can be annoying b*****ds with a mind of their own sometimes, but I'd never be without a lurcher by my my feet 1 Quote Link to post
