Working on a sleeve , gives a context, a when a where, a command

Back in the 80's a friend had a pit , a grouchy nasty fit able watch dog I hated going near the f****r but after he was taken out and worked he was like a different dog for the next few weeks ,

Dogs learn by contrast, I teach the hup command for the dog to jump up , it giving him a command for the action and at the same time he ceases to jump up at other times ,

Take him out with a tug item if you don't want to go the sleeve idea , keep him on a long lead , let him work the item , let him win (every time ) reel him in tug again let him win , the winning is important it gives him a sense of achievement and brings his charge back to zero

At the end of the day all the f****r wants to do is rip shit up , if he can't do it at home it will leak out somewhere when he is free , it's nothing personal with him and the pit , the pit was just the path of least resistance or so he thought ?

yeh true that , should have let them sort it out there and then. as you know ive got 1x gsd x grey Buck , he great with people and likes other dogs, but I am well aware what he could do if he got nas

Larry I watch him swimming in the river and secretly wish hed drown lol.

Does the shepherd have a proper outlet for his energy , not just walking and trotting I mean a full blown grab and shake the living f**k out of a sleeve or item every now and then ,   Some mutts ne

Many folks worry with talk about prey drive in the mutt , however we are not creating the prey drive and instinct , it's already there , we are merely channelling it into appropriate activity

This way it won't find its own way out , which is always going to be inappropriate in our domesticated world , otherwise we are leaving it up to the dog to decide what he wants to do with his prey instinct .

thanks casso,i will look in to this aspect of work for the shepherd, since the daughter is only 4 feet 11 tall and is as light as a feather I dont think she will be suitable for the tug of war games lol.

I went from normal tug toys onto a junior bite pillow that costs about 30euro including postage then from bite pillow onto sleeve

Main emphasis I put on to this "game" from the beginning was a grab command and a release command. With a dog his age I wouldn't go past bite pillow stage without a second person there who could help if dog grabed onto wrong body part, also with bite sleeve expect lots of bruises

I've a suede tug here you can have and a book on schutzhund you can borrow but its mostly common sense.

Off topic jig. But how's the fawn dog after his injury?

hes looking great Ross, hes healed so well you can hardly see the scar,i have to say the vet was excellent and very reasonable price wise too,I will know this winter how he runs when we get him chasing,i have high hopes he will be back to his usual self.
