I have just been doing a fitac level 1 for organic farming run by Teagasc and they took us on some farm visits. So this dude at one farm has 13 acres with about half of it planted and not intensive, he proceeds to tell us that he has 13 staff and makes €200,000 a year turn over just from the farm (he does box scheme, supplies resturuants and a couple of super markets).......now I have been in business nearly all my working life and alarm bells start ringing in the old canister......what he is saying is that he is making about 7 acres turn out €25,000 an acre every year !!!........now I am not being funny but if anyone could make farms make 25k and acre from arable they would be a billionaire cause every f****r would want to employ them I reckon. So I say to the teagasc man "Bollocks, this blokes a wholesaler" "No, no he isn't....it's all from organic farming" says your man. Right oh, if you say so thinks me........ So I look at the blokes website, grapes from Peru, onions from china, peppers from f***ing Tim buk tu !! Point being, who is certifying this as organic in the country of origin ?........and it's taking 800 tons of air fuel to get you the bloody box !! Which sort of gos against the principal in my eyes!! IMHO your as good buying from ordinary low input farms, local producers, allotment holders as you are paying a premium for something that could be from anywhere and has cost the earth to get here. 4 Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Yes, you have to have a heard number to keep a sensible amount of livestock. 10 sheep, 50 chickens, some pigs and maybe a goat or two should see me right. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
