Blackbriar 8,569
In an unusual show of unity, 64 British MEP's have joined forces to help vote down greater scrutiny of their expense allowances, worth over 300 million Euros a year. The vote scuppered proposals to publish an end of year report on how members use their allowances, which average around 400,000 Euros EACH ! It was left to just 5 British members (two Green, two SNP and one Plaid Cymru) to support greater scrutiny. Members also voted to block publication of a perk known as "general expenditure allowance", which costs European taxpayers another 39 million Euros a year. Under these rules, each member receives 51,840 Euros to help with office expenses. The money is paid into their personal bank accounts, and they are not required to provide any proof whatsoever of how the money is spent. Members are paid currently an attendance allowance of 306 Euros per day in cash, and again no proof of expenditure is required. Earlier this week, they also awarded themselves an increase of 18,000 Euros per year in expenses for their assistants - though, strangely, neither of these matters attracted much opposition...... UKIP has said that it's members accidentally voted the wrong way, and have demanded that their votes be reversed. The Conservatives have said they would support "more specific rules". Labour and LibDem's have offered no statement. Edited May 4, 2015 by Blackbriar

ratbuster 808
Greed makes people do strange things..... doesn't matter which party or country they belong to. They don't want people know about their business benefits, politicians are just like common people....

Blackbriar 8,569
So, have they been knocking on your door, looking for your vote ? Conservatives promising to reform our membership,......Labour wanting greater integration... LibDem wanting more federalism and absolutely no referendum.....UKIP wanting to leave EU and promising a referendum. All of them advocating less public spending on the services that you and I all use, down here in the real world - education, NHS, elderly care, road maintenance etc etc etc And then, while they think we're looking the other way, they pull stunts like this, not only increasing their already enormous allowances, but rejecting any suggestion that the hoi-polloi should even have the temerity to politely ask what they spend OUR money on ! That's political talk for I got caught with my fingers in the till but because I'm an mp it's not thieving it was an error of judgment and if I pay back the money it's all ok ...same as would happen in the real world if we were caught thieving , just get your apology worded right and look like you mean it and no further action would be taken ... Apart from a short sentence at her majesties hotel ...
