Skittish Bunnies

Recommended Posts

Folks,

Got a new permission and the farmer states the bunnies need dealing with badly. He says no-one's touched them for years and from what I can tell in the few walk-ups I have done he ain't wrong. He also states no-one has thrown hand grenades at them - sorry I mean used a shotgun on them.

On my other shoots I can spot, stalk and slot no probs.

Problem I have is these ones either see me before I see them or they sit still while I stalk them and shoot off before I get within range.

Now I do know how to stalk - I am also a river dry fly fisherman - so what's going on?

Couple of questions;

Does this mean night shooting only?

Will they also be lamp shy do you think?

And if so do I have shell out loads of sovs on a nite site kit?

Do I need to invest in some realtree?

ANY advice welcome - you never stop learning.

I could ambush but they seem to be very fond of the evening rather than daylight.

Thanks in anticipation.

Yeah could be - he says they murdered his maize last season and they are doing his head in - his Mrs wants some for pies too.

Never tried snaring before - suppose I could ask and if I get their number down I would get to keep the perm - don't want to lose it because its very mixed with loads to go at species wise.

Looks like Youtube time then

I am down in Shropshire - I think snaring is the way to go - got some time off and I reckon I should be able to knock some up and can check them regularly.

Mrs Won't let me have Ferretts tried that one :cray:

At the very least I can learn as I go having watched some on the toob as you say its not rocket science. And the farmer will see I am making an effort. He has hinted that the neighbors (flippin' yank spellchecker) farm has an issue too so looks like I could be quite busy for a while - yum yum

Off to get wire and eyelets tomorrow and I always have loads of para-chord about so should be okay (fingers fully crossed)

Thanks for the info gents - I shall keep you posted.

If there running off the minute they see you somebody's been having a go at them ,you got to go out at night with a lamp and see how they react to that and that will tell you there true numbers and where there going , then you can look at other methods snaring , ferreting ect to reduce the numbers and keep the farmer happy till you get organised

Great chaps - I shall try all of the above.

In my walk-abouts I have found 4 large warrens and I have only covered a third of the permission - have not even gone over the other side of the river yet so lamps it is and then snares (Knocked some up today) to cull a bit and maintain numbers by shooting - now that sound like a plan.

I will need to save up for some nite vision as I have now (today) been asked to sort some rats out on another place - flippin'eck :victory:

I may even try and build one - now there is a challenge.
