ryaldinhio 5,189
Hi guys, Having been working away since february things at home havent been looked after as well as usual. Started tidying my shed/workshop today and discovered half my fishing gear has been destroyed and rat shite everywhere! I followed the trail of destruction and foul smell and discovered the nest in my wood store which is built into the side of my shed. My new years eve plans have now been altered to setting some bait out and waiting for the little b*****ds to show their faces and giving them a sleeping tablet delivered by the hw100. My question is what is the best bait to use? I had heard chocolate melted and mixed with veg oil? I have never baited for rats so some advice would be appreciated. cheers And happy new year! tillylamp 1,940
hi mate, you can use practically any thing with them, they are greedy, like you say, chocolate is one, then there's ham, cold turkey, cat/dog food, peanut butter, jam...........anything normally attracts them, you could always put the rest of your fishing tackle down they seem to like that, lol, no only joking!! jokes aside, anything really works, good luck tl 1 Quote Link to post
treecreeper 1,136
As above, but if you know where the nest is then just shoot the buggers you can first and then put bait down to see if you've got them all. My favs nutella or another good un is liquidized tuna in oil but if there's rats already there must be food already they litterally will eat anything, my mam had one in the shed abit back was eating the dogs shit. good luck Edited December 31, 2014 by treecreeper Quote Link to post
ryaldinhio 5,189
well they have eaten mi carp chair and about £150 quids worth of nutrabaits BFM boilies! I found the nest under my wood shed today but not a rat to be seen. there was fresh droppings about tho so they wont be far. Just set two traps in the shed and set up the hw100 with ns50 borrowed off my mate and put out a bowl of nutella mixed wi oil to make it runny. Have the gun set up in conservatory so guna just keep havin a check every 20mins or so. If I get no joy with that tonight then I will sit it out properly tomorrow. Quote Link to post
treecreeper 1,136
use whats left of the boilies as bait, same principal as prebaiting when your fishing 1 Quote Link to post
ryaldinhio 5,189
Ive put them in the traps in the shed but gone for the nutella mix on the shootin spot because they have to sit and eat that not take it away with them, or atleast thats the theory! 1 Quote Link to post

davyt63 1,845
If the bait is liquidised, they have to stay and lick it up,better chance of getting a head shot via the ear cavity.a direct route to the brain, lights out. Good luck buddy 1 Quote Link to post
Rabid 1,936
With the Nutella, warm it up in hot water, mix it 50/50 with veg oil, stir in well so its real runny, then pour it around your bait station, don't put a bowl full out as when it cools its also hardens and gives them lumps they can run off with, if spread about they need to lick at it and sit on the spot better, same principle with any chocolate, peanut butter, jam on a slice of bread also works, Quote Link to post
