Ligament Too Tight

Recommended Posts

Just asking for a bit advice. I have a 6 month old puppy and on her back left foot, 1 of the Middle toes are practically straight with the nail pointing up, all of her other toes look fine it's just that 1. She has no problem with it she still runs, plays around like your average pup. The vet says it should go into place, but was just wondering if there's anything I can do to help it? Thanks dame

She will have ruptured or over stretched the ligaments that hold the toe in the correct place. If a dog puts its foot on a stone, or in a hole and the toe is forced up it is easily done. I doubt the toe will come right now, but on the plus front, I've known lots of dogs with knocked up hind toes and they don't generally cause much of a problem, unlike with front toes. Cut the nail right off, and keep it cut back permanently to avoid her catching it on things and bashing the toe up even worse.

Penny, do you know if anyone ever tried locking the toe back down in place somehow, longterm, in order to allow the tendon to shrink possibly???

I'm sure if it was possible someone would have done it by now but I can't help wondering. I've seen some, mostly coursing type hounds in the hands of dealers, with toes sticking out at every angle.

Having said that it's hard to see from the pic exactly what's going on there. Dame, is the whole toe displaced or is it one of the lower toe joints that's out of place?

Does your vet have a lot of experience of greyhounds/running dogs? If not it'll be worth going to one that does.

usually the three treatments are to cut the tendon and take the slack out by splicing it, or cut the tendon rendering it obsolete and pin fire the toe or alternatively being a middle toe have it amputated should not be detrimental. A good running dog vet will check and tell you the best option.

I'll try and get some better pictures, I'll soak the fur so use can see. I don't think its dislocated as I can put the toe in the right position but it just pings back, it feels like the tendons are tight. And the vet I saw was just a 1 that took her dew claw off, so probably doesn't know much about running dogs. I dont know if any of use know of any greyhound men in the north east?
