Net Making Advice

Hi all, I am going to have a go at making my own nets, was wondering what would be the biggest mesh board that everyone would advise to use as my hob is a bit of a beast and doesn't fit through the spun poly nets i bought and the crapy bisley ones.

2 and a quarter inch, but if hes a bit of a beast and got a collar on, he`ll probably still upset the nets.

If you make them big enough for a big collared hob to get through you'll be saying goodbye to plenty of rabbits that fly through them.

I made this mistake early on, made about 30 nets which are emergency only now and if you're not quick enough they soon get through

its not the collar thats the problem is his big waist area, i dont mind if he pulls the nets down as i will just stick them back over. Its when he tries to go through n gets stuck half way and panicks and dives back down the burrow with the net pursed round him. Might just need to retire the big guy already then. cheers for the advice lads

between two of them they get a hand full of dry food a day or if ive got any rabbits they get one of them in for 3 days n they never manage the full thing. is that too much? he does have a head like a bull and seems like everything is in proportion.

As said the nets need to be made to catch the rabbits no let a ferret threw , two and a eighth for spun you dont get much shrinkage

Not sure how much dry food you should be feeding as I've really never used it mate.but if he's in proportion he sounds ok.dont think ive ever had a hob that can slip in and out of the nets without disturbing them

this is my and there first season so its all new to me. dont have many rabbits here either so cant let any slip through the nets. just dont like him getting stuck as when i pull him out of the net i think it digs in to him as he hisses and tries to bite, its unlike him to try n bite.

A jill can usually slip threw the net but even the collar on the jill will catch on nets if you see him coming up to a net try lifting it to let him out , but once hes switched on a reaches a net he should relise theres nothing there and go back down

We all started at some point pal..if he gets tangled up in the net just kind of try and lift it off him or let him gently wriggle out of it,make sure he's well away from the hole,do everything nice and easy and no sudden movements that'll cause him to skulk back into the hole.if he's still young he'll still be very excitable,especially if he's just bolted a rabbit.if you handle him a lot more when at home and he should stop nipping.atb

It's just one of those things with big hobs,,,your best bet is using stop nets,,,and long nets,,,or if you have a dog let the dog catch them

The rabbits must be bigger down here then, but less plentiful lol.. Ive never had a problem with 2 and a quarter. Only two small ( not much bigger than a mars bar) babies to my memory have got through them in the last few years. The ferrets normally kill all the small ones under.

 

I prefer larger meshes as it makes chinning them easy. I also use large nets most of the time, maybe that has something to do with it?

I have lost a few through finer, spun poly 2 and a 8th longnets though

got a dog but shes only 12 weeks old. will be next season before shes out helping. im lucky to get two rabbits in a day up here. not many about at all. I think i will get some long nets off nelson off here at somepoint. went n checked the size of the nets i have n they are 2 inch mesh so the extra 1/4 should hopefully help out aswell. he never bites really thats why i think its sore on him. hes a big softy . my jill never butes me either but shes had a hold of my poor pup through the mesh on her run a couple of times.
