SportingShooter 0
It's like the old .22LR/HMR debate for shotguns this thread, Tools for the job at hand Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
No is the answer to the question! 5's have a lot of uses though. Quote Link to post
socks 32,253
So the general consensus is that if you had to go for an all round cartridge it would be a size 6 .......... Quote Link to post

Born Hunter 17,907
If I had to shoot only one cartridge for everything, it'd be 32gm #5 personally. But thankfully we have the luxury of choosing a cartridge to suit the job.... 2 Quote Link to post
celticrusader 78
Socks...depending on what your doing 5-7 will only vary between them in one way or another, get a couple of boxes of each and practice...what will suit one will not suit all but the rest is up to you. Quote Link to post
socks 32,253
I generally use 5's or 6's and they seem to do the job I was just wondering what everybody else thought ...... Quote Link to post
sussex 5,802
I don't think there's one cartridge suited to every job but if I had to shoot just one it would be a 32gr 5 ...something like a black gold .. Quote Link to post
Alsone 789
5 or 6, opinions vary. The original question though is whether there is an all round cartridge for game and fox, and in my opinion there isn't. 5 or 6 is an all round cartridge for game. 5 will even do ducks (if steel of course). However, to be humane, fox need something heavier unless they're very very close in. 2 Quote Link to post

I tried some 7.5's (I had left over from shooting clays) decoying crows the other day and packed up early because I was knocking them out of the sky and they were getting up again and taking off! I won't be making that mistake again. I liked No.1's for foxes, but I only ever shot the ones round the chicken pen and a couple walked up. I have stopped them close with 6's but I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it all the time. Quote Link to post
