Do Plummers Hunt Like Hounds ?

Recommended Posts

the late brian plummer outcrossed to beagle as we all know, the few plummers i have seen

and the many shown on ratting films hunt just like any other terriers yet i keep being told they pack better than other terriers, have the best nose, and hunt like hounds.

is this true, do plummers show any hound traits, do they hunt like hounds or terriers ? the original out-cross happened thirty ago now.

curiously plummer himself never referred to his terriers , apart from the original beagle first crosses, as hunting like .

love to know the truth, not a plummer terrier hater, not a plummer terrier fancier, just

interested.

They are ok in a pack but soon get found out worked single, they dont have quite the same effect as in a pack, average at best on there own imo. Alot better dogs out there that aint cash cows.

i have seen plummers work but was disapointed to see absolutely no hound traits, glen welsby a k a glen well-baised..only joking.... of the original club says he hunts hares for over an hour with his pack. jackie drakesford says she as seen plummers meld into a pack unlike other terriers.

i know plummer inbred and line bred his dogs and so kept the beagle blood circulating up to todays stock, but plummers

are still 75%, or more, terrier blood.

if old dog keeps plummers give him a shout, or any plummer breeder...nice one.

I've never read such utter sh*te in one post, lads like you run anything down without taking the time to bother going out for a day with a decent one, a good terrier that does its job is good regardless of type, colour or breed, they are just the same as any decent terrier, they differ from most on things like trainability, they also have more intelligence than you it seems and will dominate a weak owner, you cannot beat them or be heavy handed in any way but will give tremendous loyalty to anyone taking the care and time to bond with them properly, if I had to keep just one terrier then it would be a Plummer as nothing is beyond a good one, WM

Tracy or KEV, 20 yrs or more ago when the heavy snow was down we used to pack all types of terrier, patts, borders, Plummers, Lakies, and hunt the noble hare for hours on end, it was great fun on a day that you couldn't do much else on, all terriers will pack but it comes a bit easier with Plummers,, there is so much more to these dogs than just ratting, you-tube has a lot of second rate Plummers worked lightly by lads that have never worked any other terrier type so know no different and this is why Plummers have such a bad street cred, I assure you if mine were not any good they would not be in my kennels, I've never seen one with a poor nose and they can trail a hot scent while running flat out, they are no better or worse to ground than any other terrier type, some can be too hard and others will jib, not the holy grail but a decent all round little dog that's easy on the eye, it is being pushed for K.C. registration at the moment by greedy f*ckers looking to cash in on its popularity among middle class ownership, if more working class lads tried them they may be accepted a little easier among terriermen and not looked down on as sh*te, WM

I'm not sure that Old Dog is into Plummers, I think he'd rather stick with his Welsh & Fells :victory:

You never know though, if he wants a bit more drive he could introduce some Plummers to his pack :toast:

(I hope he sees this)

Hareydave, There are only a handful of people I'd buy a bitch from, I would make sure its parents were working the same quarry I wish to hunt, ask to see evidence of this or maybe have a day out with them and see if they suit you, I'm lucky enough to of had these a long time and have outcrossed, bred hybrids of every terrier type and met some decent lads that only care about work in that time, some don't even keep Plummers any more due to the politics involved with the membership of the known clubs and the stick we all take for owning them, I think there are a few decent lads in the PTCGB that work their dogs hard and I would have a bitch from ************,******** has a really well bred litter at the moment but bitches are always difficult to source unless you are known, WM

I have edited the names out now Dave's read it, WM

at last a plummer owner with some jacobs...nice one, i agree that most terriers pack well and i never agreed with brian when he said different, i dont agree with him that scottish breeds of terrier dont pack either but he bred a nice strain of terriers. if these plummers can really hunt on as you say its a shame they are only known for ratting.

do they bay on a line or just pack tighter than most terriers ?

Only hounds work like hounds, then they work along the lines that individual types and packs are bred for.Ive seen Plummers, with an hound ancestory, bushing and ratching about,in honesty they are as good as most out there. The Bedlington as hound ancestory and from what ive seen of them they hunt more houndlike, at times and depending on the individual terrier, than any other terrier type.
