Your Best Ever Working Ferret ?

I always thought my first ferret was a good worker but i now think thats just fond memory;s Theres ten jills and two hobs here and every ones a true grafter ive moved on from ferreting just on a sunday from when i started as a 12 year old kid and have different permission's in different counties and these ferrets will bolt or kill rabbits untill dug out from small burrow to large bankings with 100's of hole's to big deep sandy burrows that go off the box

I'll have a kit off you next year then please if you breed any.. ;) I can honestly say i have never had a stable full of workers that i could say that about.

I have 2 good ones at the moment... and 3 kits to try out. . . plus another litter of kits i might try a couple out of.

I would be a happy man with 4 good honest workers and a few reserves in training. . Don't care if they're hobs or jills as long as they do the job well and give 100%.

Should of gave me a shout vin Took ferrets down to the midlands for Alfie and old blue eyes , Even dropped of one for S Caple i plan to dominate the English ferrets with Scottish blood

Alway's thought i was fortunate having a few ferrets that when i got kits off of lads i could enter them slow at there own pace never rushing them and i dont reckon ive one that failed yet and getting them out a few times a week helped . the last couple of years ive bred one litter and its been the same hob and jill both times , im sitting with a nice age range of ferrets just now with one kit to bring on and the way she bosses the older ferrets off the rabbit at feeding time i reckon shes going to make the grade

but its all down to the owner if your ferrets no good why keep it and why would you ever breed from one thats no giving 110 % ? it costs the same to feed a good yin as a bad yin

I think the best ferret I had was a sandy Jill, came off the old keeper in Lord Derby's, like Gnipper's the line was generations (human) long. He gave me a sandy Jill and a poley Hob. The Jill was a great ratter and rabbiter and had a fantastic manner about her, really laid back. To be fair the Hob was a decent rabbiter too. I put both together and kept the line for over ten years and they were all good.

Too many have bred from none working lines, because of needs for different colors and sizes..

Thats the reason i did not breed any myself this year.. I re homed all my gills at the end of last season and this year we have brought in 3 batches of kits and 2 adult gills.

The only ferrets I kept after the last season was 2 good hobs.

By the end of this season I would like to have at least 1 good gill, hopefully 2.. and 4 Rock solid hobs.. Fingers crossed.

Eye, its taken me over 20 years to get my current crew and iam at a stage now where i trust any of them to do the job in hand.Personally i think two many people don't give the ferret enough time they expect instant results, its not always like that iam afraid.Ive ferreted many a warren and had no results for 30 mins etc .A good ferret will tell you if anyone is home.Spend time with your ferret be in no rush and learn to read them ,your not leave many behind that way for sure1

It sounds like you're after the type of ferrets that the spade shy rehome mate.

had good ferrets dogs or jills ,most have been sandys and white dog ferrets , got big greyhoundy ferrets ,jills there very keen and fight till there done , very good workers they came via rob moore and d sleight ,then bred them to my own ferrets , as for ratting done loads as youingsters in between coursing hares with a long dog , or two , some good sport back in the eighties there were warrens along the hedge rows ,like rabbit warrens 4 10 and dogs , ferrets did get bit up, but a bit hi karate on there cuts they winced but healed up , as after shaves an alchohal ,

I think there too many ferrets being bred as its easier to breed a jill than get it jabbed or get a hob snipped and use him .The first and only question being asked should be is my jill good enough to breed from , no can i make a bob or two out of a litter of kits

I was on Gumtree earlier last week a boy was asking £20 for kits this week there a £10 next week they going to be a £5 then free ? hes learning there no the cash making thing he thought they where

Anyone noticed a change in the actual ferrets appearance over the years? I'm not as old as some lads on here but when I was younger and all ferrets worked there was some ugly buggers about and now there's loads of fluffy smart looking ferrets about. The old keeper I got them ferrets off had a definite strain and they weren't the best looking of things but they were belters underground.

Your probably right there Gnipper... I remember my 1st polecat colored kit in the early 80s..it was from the famous Abbot Bros in Norfolk..lol.

Before that all we had around my area were Albinos that were dam ugly...lol. . . but they worked...all of them worked. nobody kept them as pets in house or on leads walking around the park . . lol.

:hmm:Well,..I am only a part timer these days,..but when I was at the rabbits day and night,..the ferrets were an incredable earner for me. I think anyone who does a fair bit of rabbit work (or is mad keen on their sport) will attest,..a good ferret realy is a treasure.

We no longer keep ferrets at home,...it is a bit of a bugger having to collect them from another location,.but there ya go...That is life....

I always know when I've got a reliable team of workers in the courts,..when the cry goes out,.."What ferrets do you want to use in this warren Phil",..and my answer is,..."Use any of them,...they all work".... :D

Then, and only then,..do I know,.. we are back in business...

All the best, and good hunting to you all,...regards, Phil.

Great attitude to have..!!!

Aye maybe but ive seen lurchers terriers , ferrets in the field i would of been embarrassed to offer room to , folk these days dont get embarrassed about breeding pure shite and polluting the working pool in the name of greed they must be desperate for a pound or two . When the working ferret goes the way of so many breeds these days who are you going to blame then ? TINY ?

at the moment i can take a few out and they all work but there always ones that go the distance on tough rabbs who dont want to move , or when its deep and they realy have to push rabbits out ,never had a prefrence a good sized bitch or a meduim sized hob,i think the trick is to not have to many but keep the ones with the best attitude ,with the current weather ferrets can be up and down ,dog ferrets still not a hundred percent on the kill at times but once weather gets cold theyll shine through to hell with fancy ferrets micros etc
