Alsone 789
Hi, What do people think of this rifle? What's the best calibre for pest control .22, .25? Are Bisley Hunting pellets any good? I'm completely a newb when it comes to air rifles. However, I have a Magpie problem in my back garden and it's sufficiently small and located next to a path to make firearm usage impossible. I did own a Gunpower Stealth pre-charged a few years ago but sold it after it failed to kill rabbits from only around 20 feet. It was certified at 12 ft lbs so maybe this was my fault - I did try to use 28 grain pellets through it thinking the extra weight would hit harder. I'm now wondering if there was a lack of velocity that caused the issues as a result of maybe using pellets that were too heavy for 12 ft lbs. Like I said, don't know much about air rifles at all. Anyway, I just want something cheap as the odd magpie or maybe a rabbit or two if out on a farm, isn't worth a lot to me when I have a SGC. So I'm thinking Lightening SE Gas Ram + Hawke Scope + Bisley Hunting. Comments? Recommendations? Edited July 15, 2014 by Alsone Quote Link to post
Rez 4,961
Lightning SE with a gas ram will be subtle for your 'pie problem, no doubts. Hawke optics are sound. Very sound indeed. Pellet wise, try RWS superdome through it. Mine liked them. I'm actually using crosman vermin pell at the minute with it. Right whack they deliver. Expect inch groups out to 28 yards or so with your set up. If you can push for it, go the HW95 route... Quote Link to post
Skot Ruthless Teale 1,701
Get a second hand hw95 or hw99 for same money as a lightning. the weihrauch is worth the money.. Quote Link to post
barrywhite 282
Get a second hand hw95 or hw99 for same money as a lightning. the weihrauch is worth the money.. As has been stated there are much better guns available get a lightning only if it is cheap, local and most important working 100 percent properly .Use a lighter pellet from a spring gun ,also 177 are very good .25 has to be a waste of time . Alsone 789
If you've a sgc then you can buy a 410 and a smoker for the same price as a cheap air gun. It used to rile me that a £50 22lr could out perform an £800 air gun . Atb Joe Yeah unfortunately the garden is urban and approx 30 feet square. Public footpath up one side (albeit behind a hedge) and houses other side and back. Discharging a shotgun would likely result in calls to plod plus I'd be at risk of getting the certificate withdrawn as I doubt they'd view it as safe in such a small space. I think non FAC air is my only option. The problem is keeping the cost down as even 2nd hand air rifles are quite a lot of money these days. I had been hoping to pick one up for £20-30 as you used to be able to in the papers. Ahhh for the old days. @Bilbo,Unfortunately I'm a lot further South than you. Quote Link to post
shergar 42
as the lads say forget the lightning , get yourself a hw 95 , say sod the budget get one and don't tell the wife you won't regret it Quote Link to post
Alsone 789
Hi Guys, What does everyone think of a Webley Raider pre-charged? I've seen one of these new relatively cheap recently (bare gun) and the reviews I've been reading seem to have been good. As I have a compressor at home, a pre-charged in some ways makes sense and its multi-shot and supposed to be accurate. So I'm thinking maybe a Raider, moderator and hawke scope. Also, couple of quick hunting questions: 1. Max range for 12ft lbs .22 against rabbits 2. Best pellet 3. Aiming point against birds eg Magpies ie head or chest 4. Moderators - do they have to be airgun specific ie is an offence to have a moderator that would fit a .22LR as I know normally these have to be on a FAC with a .22LR so I wasn't sure what the position was with regards to air rifles. Common sense, says they still do and air rifles have their own moderators, but in all honesty, as I'm new at air gun hunting (my stealth came with its own dedicated mod), I don't know the answer. Thanks in advance. Quote Link to post
barrywhite 282
a compressor has to be high pressure not for spray painting or pumping up tyres how did you fill the stealth .any moderator can be used . 25 yards range but if you can hit target at 50 yards it will still do the job ,177 is a bit better at long range .best pellet good quality dome light to middle weight .jsb or any pellets made buy them air arms ,fx ,falcon accuracy plus .they are a soft lead ...a basic pcp is ok but you have to understand it will have a power curve .If hunting with an unregulated pcp like the webley I fill my gun to 150 + bar pressure and shoot until 130 125 bar to stay at the top of the power curve .You should know about power changing with a pcp steath are all over the place as the bottle empties . Rez 4,961
1. A range you can put all your shots into an inch zone every time. 2. Tests will show you. Could be different for all raiders. 3. Either as long as you hit them. 4. My SAK mods are for lr/hmr rounds so no. They are very good too. Webley raiders are nice man. Love the bolt action look. Quote Link to post
