Another 'big Money', Rat Job !

Personally I would not like to see them eradicated, reduced yes. But I do not have to live with them. As you stated they have lived side by side for a long time. Eradicating them just on the hope that Shearwaters will breed is a bit OTT to me. Control the numbers by all means but what makes the shearwaters any the more special than the true British rat Ratus Ratus.

Just my opinion.

TC

I’d share your opinion on this TC.

In fact I was in West Wales (Skomer) a few weeks ago. I saw loads of dead Shearwaters, and they’d all been killed by gulls; you could actually see the gulls standing by the burrows, waiting for the Shearwaters to come back. None of the ecologist types there were doing bugger all about it on that island – not even shooing the gulls away.

I don’t know much about this Hebrides island – maybe, on a global scale, the Shearwaters there are more important than the last of our local black rats – but, if this is just some scheme by a group of privileged do-gooders, to justify their own existence, that wouldn’t surprise me either.

That doesn't surprise me the likes of the RSPB do a little bit but wont kill much vermin to help other vulnerable species

Its just not a good feeling, when you know the 'last' of a particular 'species',are to be destroyed. They obviously dont value them the same,as some of the seabirds. As they werent originally, indigenous. But i believe theyve been present there, for 'hundreds' of years.I suppose the 'tourists' are coming to see the birds, rather than the rats,i would imagine..........LOL

I wouldn't have thought so.....

If you look back at the origional canna post you'll see exactly the same thing was said there....

Credit where credits due,..NTS offered the tender openly to the one man band as well as the multi national company's both home and abroad...look at the outcome..!

If would encourage anyone who may be interested to submit there quite as you knever know......nothing ventured nothing gained... :)

I hope that's true and if it's the case. Then fair play.

I don't hold much regards for the tendering process. In some cases. They "Have" to get the process rolling in order to seem fair. A formality of such. Although the decision has already made.

But hey. Your right. You have to be in it to win it.

It seems the 'New zealand' company, have had all the similar large 'rat jobs',previous to this in the UK.But i hope that some 'homegrown' talent, are awarded it,this time. ha-ha-ha I wonder if this type of job, would have ever interested MATT ? (Back in the day, when he was in his prime, and all that.......he-he-he.)

I really can't comment on the whole rat situation as I know nothing about them but much like yourself, id like the job to go to a uk firm and it would be even better if it went to one of the smaller businesses......,

Jobs like this ( I imagine ) pay well & there's also other bonuses such as getting the job on your cv and the experienced gained from it all...

I've not heard who's got the job nor have I spoke to anyone who even considered it but I wish whoever gets it the best of luck,

It would be an experience they'll never forget...

In my own right?

Not on your nellie

When I worked for one of the big boys, with good technicians, admin, and technical staff available?

Possibly.

These things are rarely what they seem

I've run some big contracts in my time; including the Palace of Westminster, various utilities and local authorities, and to be honest, the best way of finding out what is needed is to speak to the chaps actually doing the job.

The trouble is, with a contract like this, you are into the unknown.... you have to allow for all sort of shite that you didn't expect when the pre tender questionnaire arrives on your desk.

If it's your bag, then good luck to you  For me, those days are long gone

Thats the thing could one of the wee guys have the back up and support to be able and capable of a job , and could they drop everything for the month or so it would take then expect folk to welcome them back with open arms ." Oh youve done your rat job , the rats ,rabbits ,bed bug's have been fine while youve been away " ?. Dont think so

I wonder how much difference there would be treating this job,,,with it being the black rat,,,I remember being on a training course at killgerm in 2003,,,and two other chaps there were from Gibraltar ,,,born and bred,,,aparantly out there the main species was the black rat,,, and they called them tree rats,,,or roof rats,,,,cos they like to climb and be high up,,,,would it make a difference to baiting ?

It was also interesting to discover, that this crowd actually recruit an "ARMY" of "VOLUNTEERS" . With " on the job " training , to assist the experienced team !

well its interesting seeing the different views.. there was a petition online but its closed now 1000 needed they got 281.

shame they are going to kill them all. i expect a load of snakes being introduced would be a rectifying ingredient over time in such a place.. a little cold maybe but adders do ok. i hear there are no snakes im not a resident so i dont know.. but vipera berus would love the job im sure.
