Most herding dogs will guard...some more intensely than others..

They are primitive critters and generally fairly protective, of their own space..

Incidentally,..I have walked out with the Kelpie Dam of your lurcher....

really????? thats interesting news to me,lol my kelpie x has no guarding instints at all,and the kelpie side of her is very evident in her make up and motion/thinking.she can work things out for herself quickly and is purely a 1 man dog but not a nasty bone in her body unless a dog pesters her, then its a quick attack and retreat

One of my kelpies was an extreme one man dog but the others have all been friendly. As mentioned above, like all pastoral breeds, they can vary a lot in temperament but I'd say the average kelpie is outgoing. The problem is that many people, particularly in the U.K., think that because Australian Cattle Dogs and Australian Kelpies are related that they're similar in character but that's like comparing a border and bearded collie or a Welsh and English springer.

A few years ago my eldest was in the vets for a night after stitches and when I picked him up he had a particularly weepy eye which had turned crusty. When I pointed this out and asked why nothing had been done about it, it turned out that when they'd logged him onto their system there was no Australian Kelpie in their database so he'd been labelled as an A.C.D. instead. The nurse had heard heelers were aggressive so had decided not to go in to clean him up...the poor old bugger would have licked her to death.

Edited to add: thanks for putting that up Jigsaw: I've never seen that before. Tony Parsons has now retired and the Karrawarra stud has been taken over by Pat Murphy (the other bloke in the clip). Noggin goes back to Karrawarra blood a lot in his pedigree including one line to Rip. Rip's great, great grandsire was a dog called Abernant Jim. Tony introduced Jim as an outcross (if you can call it an outcross as he'd bred or owned roughly forty of his ancestors) to his stud as they were becoming a bit too excitable. Jim was remarkably placid and easy going and added what Tony refers to as a "willingness to comply." Noggin's line bred to Jim, carrying ten to him...five of which are via Boanong Oscar who is Rusty's great grandsire.

Oops...sorry for taking over the thread...I go all nerdy when I start talking kelpie pedigrees. :icon_redface:
