charlie caller 3,654
If you are going to have a .220 swift .22-250 or .204 you might as well just use your .243 with a 55-60 grain bullet, it will be no louder, but will out perform all of them, the .222 on the other hand will be quieter, cheaper to run, and deadly out to 250yards+ 1 Quote Link to post
Born Hunter 17,910
The rapidly expanding gases should be contained by a decent moderator. The magnitude of the shock wave generated with a supersonic projectile should be dependant on projectile geometry and velocity I'd of thought. All things being equal, a higher velocity projectile will create a larger shock wave and appear louder. Strange then that my .22 hornet was quieter than my pals .17hmr 35grain bullet@ 3100fps @ the muzzle, compared with a 17 grain bullet @ 2550 fps @ the muzzle, and that was with the same moderator on each rifle, curious eh ? Curious yeah but without a precision measurement it's difficult to tell what is actually louder. Were the circumstances exactly the same for the 'listener' in both cases, ie position relative to the muzzle and environment? Also is the Hornet mod actually efficient with a hmr? How does the geometry of the 22 hornet compare to the 17 hmr aerodynamically? Too many factors to consider but curious yeah. Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
Yes I take your point, variables indeed do come into play, I may even be wrong saying it was louder, but certainly a harsher(rather unpleasant if one can use that term relating to firearm report) crack, but we tested it enough times for me to formulate (rather unscientificaly) the opinion that the hmr has a more defined crack to it, but who cares eh 1 Quote Link to post

Out of interest though, you're not an advocate of the 17hmr? Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
No I dislike them to say the least apart from all the problems people have with split cases, bullets loged in barrels etc etc, they are crap in the wind, and despite the claims people make about shooting foxes with them (yes I know they will kill foxes at a reasonable distance) why limit yourself to something just as loud as a small cf without the power, if you buy one you know what will happen, you will get foxes skulking on the edge of its humane range, in my opinion around 70- yards and then you will always be questioning yourself as to take the shot or not, for fear of wounding, no get a proper fox gun like a .222 for instance, then you can shoot with confidence at the limit (I would imagine) of your night vision, and the wind can do what it likes, 245 ish ftlbs .17 pill or 1070 ish ftlbs .222 you do the maths mate 1 Quote Link to post
hutchey 147
fair do's CC. There seems to be more choice in 223 for pretty similar performance. Might be the way forward 1 Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
Chav calibre .223 lol 1 Quote Link to post
hutchey 147
Chav, how rude I searched some other threads and forums and went to the local gunsmith earlier and loads point to the 223 as offering more bullet choice, better rifle choice la lal la la etc There's so little between them and lots say they are both just as good as each other. Guess its a preference choice Will check what the rifle cost/availability is too Quote Link to post
let'sshoot 11
how about using fmjs in the 223 for head shot rabbits, just as humane as an air rifle pellet, more accurate than an air rifle, capable of much longer shots - great practice and no meat damage. Thanks 1 Quote Link to post
danw 1,748
Hutchey as you know I have both .222 and .223 both with jet z moderators next time your down we could compare the two but I have to say I can't tell the difference . 1 Quote Link to post

Thanks Nothing wrong with that, it will be just as dead. Only things which would get in my way would be the price of the ammunition for Rabbits and what happens when a fox comes along... Thanks Just make sure you have a bank behind the rabbit you shoot, as fmj are rather prone to ricochet 1 Quote Link to post
