shropshire dan 467
Hi all, just checked through my hmr ammo after hearing some concerns and have found 2 out of 50 with a hair line crack where they are necked down. What shall I do with the rounds? If they are safe to fire ill use them if not what shall I do? Thanks for any help Atb Dan Quote Link to post
Bunny Boiler 177
Are they cracked before firing? Is that what you're saying? Or are the cases cracked after firing? If its after, the reason could be to do with head space when the round is in the chamber if its before, then I would be unsure. Never come across any like that myself. Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
Sorry before firing. I've read a lot online about cracked rounds causing the powder to become damp, in turn only the primer pops and the bullet sticks a few inchs into the barrel. After reading I thought id check and found 2 out of 50. So preety concerning. Quote Link to post
andyf 144
Hi: Yes go on and fire them, no problem, the brass case doesn't 'do' anything when its fired anyway, its just a convenient way of putting powder, primer and bullet in the correct order inside the barrel. I had 17hmr for a while, and I had ammo issues, mine was NO POWDER, the primer fired and pushed the bullet up the barrel about 4", luckily I was able to understand what was going on, stopped and used a cleaning rod to clear the bullet! Crappy Factory Ammo again! I've never had a problem with 22LR and I must have shot off many 1,000's in many different rifles, yes I've 'poppers' and 'crackers' and one or two that didn't fire but mostly they've been fine. I was once given a few 100 old Eley from the 1950's and they all fired perfectly. What is the problem with hmr? Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
Nothing wrong with the hmr, was just concerned by the cracks in cases. Ill fire them and keep a cleaning rod in the bag just in case. Thanks Quote Link to post
Born Hunter 17,960
For the price of a few pence I'd just chuck em. Save buggering about worrying. Quote Link to post

shropshire dan 467
Thanks BB Atb Dan Quote Link to post
andyf 144
The 'procedure' you obviously crave is to chamber them and fire them off. What are you on? There is no rfd rescue service get real buddy. Quote Link to post
3175darren 1,102
Take the box back where you got it, and exchange the damage ammo for good stuff, why risk it you paid good money for it, Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
They've gone now pulled the bullet heads off them. Will pop the primers next time I zero the air rifle Thanks for all the help Atb Dan Quote Link to post
Cedric 132
Hi Dan, can you tell us what brand of ammo? PS. Your 'disposal' procedure seems most sensible ! Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
Thanks. Yes its Hornady 17g V-max ammo. 2 bullets out of 1 box of 50. The heads just came out with a turn and pull with the fingers I think due to the crack they were very loose in the case. Atb Dan Quote Link to post

Anyone who has a problem with split HMR ammo feel free to save them and I'll happily take them off your hands and dispose of sensibly. Thank you! Quote Link to post
