NEWKID 29,047
It's been a couple years coming but Mick finally got around possibly the grumpiest farmer in the south west to allow us to thin the rabbits out for him. with pockets of land around this bit already part of his permission, and a bit a mile or so away which always produces good numbers, this bit had been like an island in the middle, and an island that had a very healthy rabbit population. It was to be our last day (probably) at the hedges, so Sean came up with Koda and camera ( you all know by now he masquerades as a photographer to get out of the general chores of ferreting ), Mick had invited 2 brothers who he had been out with a few times this season, they brought a russel and elderly springer, I took my 2, so it was a fairly heavy artillery that slogged up the steep field, watched by a small herd of bullocks to what can only be described as ... a f***ing great hedge. it was long, thick and full of holes, we had an array of nets between us, Sean taking a particular shine to a few pink ones which were in my bag.... which now seem to have gone missing ... we set to work, well most of us, and got stuck in.. the dogs were marking all over, and they were right no sooner had a couple of handfuls of ferrets been dropped in the action began, the dogs picked up the odd runner, most were netting, and a few were an arm down the hole job, no real digs to speak of.. they kept coming steadily.. and by 11-30, the first section was complete with 30 in the bag.... a good morning by any standards... This was a social day, and the piss taking was as good as ever, we had to watch our language a bit as the farmers young son came and joined the party and was a great young lad, he got stuck right in and we have a new convert to ferreting, his dad was gonna pick him up at 12-30 but he rang him and asked to stay, good lad The next section, was bigger again, the same hedge, just wider, proper Devon hedges ....same again, the action was nearly as good.... well on Micks side anyway, Sean sloped off to that side to get some action pics... The action stayed steady and everyone had a laugh, you've got to enjoy days out like this, I don't think we'll be hitting the hedges again as the young are in numbers now, it's a hobby not a job so they'll be there for next year. The day ended on 51, a great way to round off our ferreting year, we've had some good numbers this year, and met a few knew lads along the way. Hopefully next season will be just as good....... but maybe a little dryer 9 Quote Link to post
