Breeding Rabbits To Re-Populate

Recommended Posts

I been thinking about this a lot recently, rabbits are thin on the ground around here so it would be handy to re-populate the areas with a breeding project etc. Now what I was thinking is doing it like the warreners would have done it back in the day. Then distribute these rabbits to other warrens then to be ferreted weeks later. Just like a pheasant shoot would.

Has anyone tried this before and could you give me any advice?

I do understand 6 rabbits eat as much as 1 sheep, so if I wanted to breed 200 rabbits, how many acres would I need to feed this amount.

I know it sounds a random idea and obviously it would easier to travel around hunting all over UK but they must be acres of common land thats not being used for grazing and would be suitable for such a project.

good hunting

who's land will you be putting these onto?

maybe the fact that rabbits are not around in huge numbers, should give you a clue that the areas cant support them?

introducing a non native species that's classed as a pest, am sure your breaking one or two laws

Theres probably a good reason theres no rabbits on the ground your looking to repopulate poaching, disease, the land owner doesn't want them . If your going to build a warren like day's of old why bother to distribute them to other warrens to be ferreted weeks later just take what you need from your own warren ?And im sure its technically illeagal to release rabbits as there not a native species

And your ideas got more holes than a sieve
