The Balance Of Power

It's a balance mate, the wealthiest countries have the best defense. I see us going bankrupt more of a threat to our defense than if we strengthen it or not.

And I don't see defence spending being a significant cause of that. We spend something like 2-3% GDP on defence. Something I consider essential at the level we have currently. But that's where we hit an impasse.

IMO they all affect us, in subjectively different ways. I guess it's the argument of neoconservatism vs paleoconservatism.   Scares the shit out of me cutting our defence budget. We're getting to a

it works for some lol   joking aside, we bomb these countries and we very seldom get the target we want. there dragged out some hole or other in the latter stages, meanwhile all you see is f***ing d

The cost of deploying our armed forces in these third world dumps must have been a large percentage of the budget though which is probably why we had to scrap the harriers etc. If we had never bothere

Ask nurses etc where they want the money spent, the countries on its knees.

The cost of deploying our armed forces in these third world dumps must have been a large percentage of the budget though which is probably why we had to scrap the harriers etc. If we had never bothered with those wars wouldn't our armed forces be healthier and better equipt?

I would just like to see what exactly we have gained from all of this. I suspect once we pull out Afghanistan will turn in to a giant cluster f**k, Iraq is a giant cluster f**k already and god only know's what's happening in Libya. Have we weakened our ability to defend ourselves against threats from the big players rather than make ourselves more secure?

I'm all for a nuclear deterrent and a top class defense military. I'm not for us being the worlds policemen unless we have very clear goals about how we are going to proceed and what our exit strategy is. The situation we put our troops in to in Helmand in the early days of the war was unbelievable, they were completely under resourced and seemed to have little goal, there was almost no media coverage of it whatsoever and the more I read about it I just couldn't believe in this day and age our Top Brass were so clueless. The soldiers acquitted themselves admirably but it beggars believe what they were expected to do with so few troops in Helmand.

It was after reading Doug Beatties book that this started to become clear to me.

So would you be happy to personaly scrape by week after week just so we have a massive defence bill ?

Fook that may as well be dead anyways.

Life is for living.

Happy medium is the key.

I'd be happy for the country not to have made a rod for it's own back with the welfare state we live in where 50% Gov spending goes to health & social care!

Lets face it, a lot fo countries have nothing like the military we do. Why not go for that eh?

Happy medium.......... that's great untill things become unhappy! Which they historically have every 30 years or so.

we give India 1.9 billion a year, 450 million a year to Pakistan and even 27 million a year to china, then they say we need to make cuts to our defence budget, Even harder to get my head around is the fact more people work in the NHS than there is in the Chinese army :icon_eek:
