Greyhound Type Ferrets

Hello all.

 

I don't know if its been done before etc etc, But does anyone still keep a line of them Greyhound Type ferrets ?

 

They were very long and lean to look at ,compared to the small and stubbier types that seem to be more common these days.

 

I've remember going to that place in Norfolk (Abbot Bros) in the early 1980s and buying 3 Jills from them all from different litters and they were completely different to the types I see these days..They were what I later heard called greyhound types..at the time they were just perfect ratting ferrets that did very well at battling underground and I/we thought they were the norm and all ferrets were like this.

 

But 30 years later they don't seem to be that way anymore.. I know we have Micros/Angoras/Euros and all this other stuff that has been mixed into the breeding lines along the way and watered down the true original lines of the simple ferret.

 

some of mine are small and short ...and the bigger ones are not lean and racey even when they are fit and ready for work,they are broader and stronger looking.

 

I have been out with different people over the last few years and still out of all of them I have not seen what i would call an old school greyhound type .

 

The closest I've seen on this site were the one that Magwich had...but he was robbed of his, like many of the others on this site.

 

Last Question.. Does anyone still have any of these types ? Have you got a good working proven hob that I could use over a great little Jill..?

Yer I know what you mean Vin.

 

I've got one old albino jill here that fits the type, bred her to one of my 'stubbier' ferrets once and she never produced anything like her.

 

Only ones I've seen that seem to consistently fit the bill, are owned by Magwitch. I've asked in the past for a kit, on here, and no luck.

Yes its a disgrace..he and many others have suffered from thefts... lines of ferrets will be lost forever. very very sad.

I'm not sure if mine are the exact same but I have a few here that a long and slim, me and a mate have kept this line for a while and I've bred off them before and still get the odd long greyhound type but my lass sumtimes over feeds them lol

a friend of mine has a line greyhound ferrets the last 20 years even the hobs in the line are small an lean iv never had a bad one of him

Gaz my lass kept 2 jobs back but she over feeds them and they haven't been worked

Ps.that is not a dig at anyone asking to see pics.....just stating with all the thieving what's been going on lately is it wise to be puting pics of your stock on.........

 

 

I for one won't be putting two many pics of what stock I keep.....shame really but that is what it's come to...

Yep, I remember both Abbott Bro's and greyhound ferrets.

 

I could be totally wrong but I dunno if greyhound ferrets were a line/strain, or just a type found in litters. They were certainly advertised as if breeding true but I wonder how much of it was sales pitch? Lets face it, back in the day if you owned two or three Jills that you bred off, it could be a difficult time offloading the kits, especially as they'd be eating you out of house and home!

 

From what I seen they never bred to type and seemed just the racier ones in normal litters. The Jill to next doors ferrets was of this type, a cracker, the Hob looked lean and fit too but both Hob's off them resemble 'grisly bears'.

Weren't the proper greyhound ferrets meant to be decent sized and strong as well as long bodied? Nowadays it seems to be the smaller ferrets that get called greyhound?

I had a really long powerful poley jill off a local bloke for a brief spell and it has to be the fastest ferret I've ever seen, only problem being it was scared of the dark and when she sprinted it was off across the wood away from the hole.
