ChrisJones 7,975
Have a look at Cold Steel's Special Forces Shovel. Don't be put off by the name. They're a copy of the old soviet issue trenching spade. They work really well. Quote Link to post

B.P.R 2,798
Theyre handy to lock in a 'right angle' position for scraping/lifting dirt out... Quote Link to post
The one 8,544
Theyre handy to lock in a 'right angle' position for scraping/lifting dirt out... But would you have used it to dig your hob out at 5 foot at the beach ?. Quote Link to post
mhopton 807
I've sharpened mine to chop through ruts and I've dug 3 ft through slate filled banks with ease where a big spade would bend but I always take a big spade for the deep digs Quote Link to post
B.P.R 2,798
Theyre handy to lock in a 'right angle' position for scraping/lifting dirt out... But would you have used it to dig your hob out at 5 foot at the beach ?. Ofcourse not. Would you use any micro/foldable spade for a 5 foot dig? ... You would if it was all you had... But not out of choice... Theyre handy for what they are meant for... light-medium digging tasks... with little impact on space... Luckily... i dont ferret any beaches... And when i do... your lads there to dig ... Edited January 13, 2014 by B.P.R Quote Link to post
The one 8,544
Aye its handy having a mini me I always think that those spades are for digging fox holes or filling sand bags on some distant shore and no for digging ferrets out i would sooner be over spaded with a nice bull dog etc than take one of them and be stuck there for 4 hours on a 2 foot dig Quote Link to post
gav1212 16
I got a Sealey one from a farm supply shop near by, ive used it 3 times and its done the job. Pretty robust too. its the same one as in the link. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sealey-SS01-SS03-Folding-Shovel/dp/B005FPUNF2 Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
I can see the use of being able to lock it into a position to lift soil out. But I've come to the conclusion that there is less hassle involved in carrying a proper spade than there is digging with a little one. 1 Quote Link to post

And have been using this ever since... I cant be arsed buying a new one when this foldable does me just fine... Until i come unstuck... If it aint broke.... dont fix it ... Quote Link to post
mhopton 807
Nothing worse than using a big or medium spade when your right in the middle of a hedge 1 Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
Aye I've carried a small spade for years, until I broke it a few weeks back. Since then I've had to take a big one. It's a pain to dig in tight hedges but when digging 4/5 foot or more its a blessing. You don't end up with a hole to narrow to dig further or get your arm down lol. Quote Link to post
B.P.R 2,798
Im sure these are older bulldogs... If so... we have snapped LOADS of them... Quote Link to post
