comanche 3,297
My best bass has stuck at a little over 4lbs for years .Finally -after much umming and arghing as to whether I really wanted to go and doubts about the weather -we managed to get out on the only sunny day of last week. The skipper was a bit tactiturn about what was about ,"Could be this . Could be that." He was right. We ended up with a real mixed bag of huss ,a tope, the inevitable doggies ,a few late season mackerel ,pot loads of pout ,a cod and two bass . One of which was mine . 7lb 9oz! I'm usually the one surrounded by bass-hauling mates while I add to the species count with things like shad ,gurnard , blennies, even bl**din starfish . I did catch a lobster once though which kept em quiet for a bit 1 Quote Link to post
Outlaw Pete 2,224
If there's one thing to come out of the sea that I, to this day, couldn't help myself but eat? It's Bass! God, how I envy you the feast That f**ker must have provided! You though?! F**king shocking to see ye, mate! I, honestly, could never have picked ye out of a line up as the mush I last clapped eyes on. Horrible thing is though; I looked pretty much like that, thirty years ago. Ye should see the f**king state of me now! As I grunt and wheeze and shit myself, trying to fart, as I drag my body up from the cow shed, I sometimes glimpse this wizened husk in the windows reflection. Yeah. On reflection? Ye looking pretty f**king good, mate! Hell of a fish though! 5 Quote Link to post

God, how I envy you the feast That f**ker must have provided! You though?! F**king shocking to see ye, It all went wrong when the picture in the loft was damaged by damp and my supply of asses' milk dried up. As for trying to find a virgin to sacrifice. Tried Oil of Oley but just ended -up looking older in Spanish Funny things , Sussex bass. Despite the written wisdom of experts who one and all recommend nicely presented mackerel flanks and sand eels ,the ones round here love rotten old defrosted mackerel heads and this one fell for a strip of pout ! Malt 379
Awesome fish, well done! My ultimate catch when out fishing. I've fished for tuna out of the canaries, that was good, but nothing gives me the satisfaction that I get when I occasionally land one of those silvery devils! Quote Link to post

There is something special about a bass . Always a chance of a real biggy round here . The inshore nets have had them over 20lb quite close to the beach and the skipper who is a bass fan has hooked fish he could do nothing with on his light gear.I don't disbelieve him when he says they were bass . He's the sort of guy who can diagnose what you've hooked by looking at the bend in the rod and is usually right . Edited October 23, 2013 by comanche 1 Quote Link to post

He's the sort of guy who can diagnose what you've hooked by looking at the bend in the rod and is usually right . Funny how some blokes can do that with such accuracy! Years back we were out off the headland on a charter over a sandbank known locally as the Turbot bank. We were targeting the turbot, and my rod started violently knocking. Nothing of note had been caught up to that point, a few dabs, two or three dinner plate sized turbot, a cuckoo wrasse, etc, and everyone on the boat stopped what they were doing to watch. Everyone watched with baited breath, apart from the skipper. I said to him in my excitement, "Decent turbot, you reckon?" He replied, "Hmm, maybe.. But then again it could be a tail up doggie.." What you reckon came up and where was the hook..? I'll give you a clue, it wasn't a decent turbot and it wasn't hooked in the mouth... Quote Link to post
