Buch 145
The plasterer was only an example, working in the public sector is far far more secure than anything in the private sector atm. I agree pretty much with what WILF said. Everyone elses had to pull there socks up so why shouldnt the public sector? I dont feel like im owed anything more then the guy next to me. All these teachers, firemen ect striking seem to want to be more equal than everyone else
Malt 379
All this "we've all got to tighten our belts", how many people actually make a concious, voluntary decision to do so over having it forced upon them? How many people would choose to take a pay cut because those at the top tell us what's needed when there's a chance you could avoid doing so? The MP's, Council executives, investors, bankers, etc certainly ain't going to, they're going to use every option they have available to avoid it affecting them. The ones further down the line are trying to do the same by using the only option they have got - the unions..
nothernlite 18,028
Well I'm sorry but I work in the construction industry and while the recession has been in place I've found it hard to get work and I've known of a couple of jobs I've lost to a fireman who's topping up his well paid first job by being able to undercut tradesmen who rely on only one job. Like I said until firefighters are honest with their total earnings do you really think I'm going to feel sorry for someone who's raking it in in other ways?. as i said earlier i was on a job and it was all firemen of the nightshift and they were getting £120 in there hand a day joiners plumbers and sparks i'm a fully qualified spreader and don't get £120 a day these days. theres a difference from being qualified and good earning alot more than that a day now that was a few years ago lol

B.P.R 2,798
What annoys me is the bleeding heart socialists and unions campaigning for their own little corner, which compared to the rest of the country is surprisingly well off. At the end of the day there isnt this endless money pot for public sector pensions. I work in the public sector, ive had a pay freeze and a pension change. My pension was very good, will still pretty decent, and if you compare it to what can be gotten in the private sector its unbelievable. You cant really expect the rest of the country to pay for your pension when they can hardly afford to feed there kids can you? At the end of the day if its so bad, quit, do something else. I wont quit my job because i cant get anything like it in the real world. I can imagine its the same for you guys. When you hold the countries feet over coals (ironic) about something like this you will get some resentment but you cant blame people can you? The fire service want a 40% pay rise to 30k? What about the military?.... NHS workers?.... and the like? ?... The army will have to step in...work those extra hours.... to wipe your arses....and get FOOK ALL FOR IT! Lads, sorry but that just sounds like pure jealousy.. So the firemen have been able to secure themselves a comfortable retirement - good luck them, they should be applauded, not pilloried.. Fireman, nurse, soldier, ect. Any person who spends their working live doing one of these shitty/dangerous jobs should be suitably rewarded while doing it and at the end of it.. This whole 'they get more than the others get so they should get less' attitude is wrong though IMO..Not at all mal....But wheb the firemen decide to go on strike.... the soldiers will have to step in.... and will get paid NOTHING for it.... That was my point You say you won't get paid a penny Lee, but isn't it part of your job to respond to any need your country might have for you? I think you guys get the shitty end of the stick when it comes to pay and conditions anyway mate.. You have to take what's given and aren't allowed to stand up for yourselves the way other public sector workers can.. Military will step in...ofcourse...where there is a need.... But my point is... they decide to strike.... soldiers have to work more.... fill the gaps... wipe their arse... Many will be drafted from different regions....away from family....scraping for qualified personell.... And i bet.... they will be in some shitty TA camp... on the floor... with a rollmat and sleeping bag.... Edited September 2, 2013 by Blue Pocket Rocket

neil82 1,009
Do you reckon that this thread hasn't quiet gone the way the OP wanted it to ? should have sent a letter to the guardian newspaper rather than post on here, this sort of crap reminds me of the good old days of never ending strikes and candles on the table to have light to eat the evening meal (and not a rose in sight ), as I posted earlier, if he feels so hard done by, either walk or set up his own pension fund and accept the crap rates non-government employees will get. Yes he does a job that involves personal danger but that must also be part of the reason he took it on in the first place, don`t know anyone in the service who will honestly say it was for public service, its either for the money or adrenalin.
