Accuracy Test?

Recommended Posts

He does sound remarkably like a pratt I know, cant be the same guy different ends of the country, but I bet they are from the same mold, a complete bloody know it all, who cant be told anything, have fun and let us know how you get on, that is if he has ever shot a deer? Except in his mind :hmm:

What a load of boll--ks , anyone that encourages you to rush a shot is a complete pratt, and apart from the possibility of wounding/missing, what about safety? If his priority is getting a deer on the ground asap, then surely he is not paying proper attention to the safety factors, and I would suggest is made even worse with a nervous novice, and yes you are correct on the target size issue, an inch group @ 100 yards off sticks will take a lot of practice and skill, has he shown you his prowess by doing it? I bet not.

it sounds to me like this chap is just a little bit too big for his boots and enjoys lording it over novices, my advice, slow down ignore him and shoot accurately and safely, and if he continues, find another mentor

Never shot deer but I agree with Charlie 100%.

You can't be aware of your surroundings and what lies beyond the target if your total focus is a rushed shot into an animal in the foreground, not to mention the wounding risk. I'd 100% rather let a target go than take an untenable shot - in fact I've done it, I was out shooting when Charle appeared and then disappeared into a field of wheat. I could just about see where he was but, did I take a shot, no! Simply because I only had an idea of the lie of his body not the full picture as all I could see was the very top of his head and I wasn't prepared to risk a glancing shot instead of a solid flank shot into the chest, and this was with a shotgun!

Split views on this. while I don't agree with him timing you out loud as that puts you of and puts unnecessary pressure on you. And i agree that you should only ever take a shot in your own time But seriously 10 seconds is a long time.

. If your not taking the shot because your wobbling then its not going to get any better the longer you take infact it will get worse as muscle fatigue sets in and it shows lack of confidence and experience which means you might rush a shot later and wound a beast. Just put some more range time in and practice lots untill you build your confidence up.

So I can kind of see why he's doing it just don't agree with his methods.

Hi I know you may have to take a quick shot from time to time but trying to rush anyone and pushing them into taking a quick shot is only going to end badly! if he had left me to it I would have taken the shot when I was comfortable with it! be it in 5 seconds time to 25 seconds time the wait could be to wait for the quarry to be in the correct position to take the shot as they are not all going to present them selves in the perfect position as soon as you see them.

I will not nor have I ever rushed a shot with anyone in my ear telling me to shoot now do it now!! my father in law used to do this years ago which resulted in many a cross word! but never a wounded animal.

Rick, honestly I'm not having a pop at you and I agree your mentor sounds like a right c**t and you should defiantly find a better one.

But having been in his position of having students I would be very concerned if they were taking that long to shoot accuratly at a inanimate target. I certainly wouldn't be taking then out on live quarry that tend to be unpredictable at best and rarely stand motionlessly for that kind of time.

As I said not having a pop ATB Rick

Ok Dubba I was just trying to say iv been shooting in the field for bunnies pigeons and fox and when in the field the target is more than visible and I know exactly what I will be shooting and where it is unlike him telling me the bit of clay right middle then 10 - 9 - 8 - 7 ect so not only was he trying to rush me I had to find the bit of broken clay he was talking about amongst the other hundreds of bit of clay on the back stop! not a fair assessment really!

Totally agree the fella sounds like a right c**t and not the sort of person that should be acting as a mentor. Was that the FAO and a condition that you needed a mentor? There must be someone better about, is there anyone local to you here?

Hi all what is the usual accuracy test for a new shooter arriving at a new shoot? I ask because I asked a guy at my gun club if he could help me out and shoot with him and him being my mentor so he came up the club yesterday to see if I could shoot from a bi-pob shooting stick so I set rifle up with 2 rounds he said right hand side middle clay shoot now 10 seconds 9 8 7 6 I shot then he said left side bottom shoot now! is there really that much of a rush? all he kept banging on about was taking a quick shot and couldn't grasp me taking a bit longer than he wanted and when I said I wasn't happy to take the shot till I was ready he said it wasn't quick enough! he also said when I go to a new shoot I would need to show them I can put 3 rounds in an inch off the bi-pod shooting stick at 100 yards! is this correct? in all my years of shooting rabbits and foxes and deer for that matter I have never rushed a shot or taken a shot unless completely happy with it! he didn't seem to grasp the fact that I wouldn't take a rushed shot and risk shooting the quarry in the ass! I am trying to get him to take me on his next stalk to see exactly how he does it and whether he rushes his shot!

We are going to east holme with the club soon and he wants me to take my sticks and want to run a competition between us at the 200 yard mark which im ok with but he has had a lot more experience shooting off the sticks than I have so im expecting him to beat me.

Any advice on this would be great thanks guys
