NEWKID 29,171
We're over in Guernsey on a weeks holiday, raining today so we went to the underground hospital, very eerie place, it's a huge network of tunnels and was built during the German occupation of Guernsey from 1940 to 1945, it was really interesting reading, and brought home the harsh reality of life during the war times for some people, the kids were completely spooked by it all lol... We went onto the occupation museum afterwards, again really interesting, the Channel Islands were the only British area in Europe that the Germans occupied, and the fortifications around the island are still reminders if that time, it was a tough time for the islanders, I found it all really interesting though, I know there's a few lads on here that like the war memorials, museums etc. if your ever over there worth a few hours looking about IMO

NEWKID 29,171
There's a real strange feeling down there mate, I don't believe in ghosts or any of that sort of thing, but that place just felt wrong... There was manakins in some of the tunnels, now they didn't impress the kids at all lol...

NEWKID 29,171
intresting.. the war years were very depressing, and people didnt have half the things weve got today, love the museums though The museum was good mate, amongst the depression ( as such) it showed the German soldiers who had just fought their way across Europe and had taken France, then landed on these defenceless islands. It was like they had a holiday in the middle of the war, they are well fed, sunbathed, swam etc... Although not so good for the islanders the German soldiers definitely enjoyed a bit of relaxation.... Edited August 6, 2013 by NEWKID

NEWKID 29,171
You'd love it then Astral lol My lads really interested in the war, guns, tanks etc, he was ok down the tunnels but my little girl wasn't so impressed lol... My wife used to go there when she was a kid as she'd visit the family out here every year, she said it was worth a visit and she wasn't wrong.. They've opened some if the bunkers now as well as the fortification towers along the coast, so we'll have a drive around over the next few days and have a look in them too... Outlaw Pete 2,224
Newkid; I visited the 'Underground Hospital' on Jersey. This was back in the sixties and it was, frankly, nothing like as well sorted as what ye showing there. Either way; Reading this thread has made my skin crawl. You're a lucky man though, having a link with the channel islands such as you have. Read up on the sites out there. I'm sure I've read some well documented, home grown, 'tour guides' on a forum dedicated to WW2 talk.

NEWKID 29,171
It's worth a visit if your this way no doubt... Scaring the kids was easy Ruby, just sneaking up behind them and a quick grab was enough for a scream to echo around the place lol... Pete, there is a lot of empty corridors and then every so often you'll have a room full of beds or a kitchen, ammunition store etc Couple bits of info about it for those who are interested: The tunnels cover 75'000 square feet and there are 1 1/4 miles of corridors, around a million cubic feet or 60'000 tons of solid rock were removed. It took 3-1/2 years to construct by hundreds of slave workers from across Europe. It was made to house 800 patients but at times could have housed 3 to 4 times that amount ( I couldn't imagine the noise of that many injured men trapped down there no natural light and it must have been stifling for air)....
