Have had this lad below a few months now, his a full saluki, tor of dartmoor and win swift, 17 month old. Doing very well. I decided to get started on just a few bunny's last night, nothing major,

heres a pic of some old windswift salukis, this advert was 1965, i keep all sorts of old clips and bits of history

You speaking from personal experience mate? LOL Can you get feathered eared russels

Was out again tonight, nothing major, just for 45 mins. My saluki done well, although he cleared a couple of wee fields as he hunts up a good bit at the moment lol, that's salukis he will eventually settle down .. Anyhow, he ran 6 got 5, his a young dog, so the easy rabbits will give him some confidence.. i was happy with the way he ran, really boxing them off the hedge ect, time will tell, but so far its good. However, what ever happens, he has a permanent home here, his a great guard dog and the wife has got attached to him..lol

Pics below,,

Thanks  . The full saluki, can be hard work, its not all easy. Last night, as i said, he cleared a field or 2 of rabbits, due to him hunting up and not coming back, they hunt for them selfs most of the time, he did come back eventually and thankfully, when i was walking back, the rabbits were out in the same field again, this time of the year, rabbits are green, so they give the dog a second chance lol...

He wont be a top lamping dog, or hare dog ect, but i am happy if he gets a few here and their, he is doing well so far, but as we have small fields here in Ireland, i am not expecting 3 out of 3 hares ect. I will be happy if he gets a few over the season. It can be very frustrating at times hunting a full saluki, i would not recommend hunting them in company, unless you have another understanding saluki owner..lol, especially lamping, when dogs need to go out and come back quick....most salukis dont do that...!

In time he will learn, but i don't want to use him for lamping all the time if i can help it, just now and then too boost his confidence and get his mouth working, they don't learn to strike well other wise from my experience. I did a bit of research on him and he could have some Iranian breeding threw him as well, due to the way he acts and looks at times.....i do know that his prey and killing drive is over the top!!!! He has killed a few feral cats on his own,big buggers too and if he is got food or bones, he does not just let out a warning growl if other dogs are near, he wants them out the way altogether and will try and kill them if they are their, so he has to be fed on his own.. All fun and games with salukis, but i like them a lot, i think you need to...

where are the iranian lines in him? few points you have made the salukis not using the mouth properly the vast majority I have worked with and been out with have never had a problem picking up quarry. As for not running in groups this is not a trait most salukis experience as by nature they are a pack animal, but they dont sociallise much other than with other working dogs, it seems to be an inherited understanding of other working dogs. One trait is the dominance factor when maturity starts they continually show dominance towards other dogs. There are two simple rules to follow with salukis one is bonding and the second never display anger or bad temper towards them as they are not very forgiving.

I am just guessing db that he has iranian lines..lol its just the way he looks and acts at times, from the pics ect i have seen on the net, but sure, what do i know... :icon_redface: ..he is win swift/tor of dartmoor, as that's is what i was told. He is bonding well with me, i am sure he will get better as time goes by. I never said he is not using his moth properly, i just want him to get use to using it, his strike is good so far.

Thanks for you input, good to hear sound advice from someone that knows the saluki well like your self.

Edited to say, just read my previouse post, what i meant by not learning to strike well is, all lurchers ect in general, not just salukis, i all ways lamp a dog, just to get it use to using its mouth, i did not mean that salukis dont strike well...
