Patterdale Pups Just Born, Keeping One To Work.

Hi, my patterdale has currently had a litter of 10 patterdale pups, am keeping a boy, am wanting the dog to act as an employee to myself, i will learn the dogs the basics as in house training, lead walking etc, i am going to be using the dog for rats rabbits and other small vermin, i want the dog to be very keen and at some stage mark up, as training goes how would you go about it for rats, what age to start ? i know where there are some rabbit warrens decent size holes would it be good to show the dog these early ? if so how early, i know time is good i have alot of patience, the bloodlines are strong, good parents mother was used for bushing for lurchers to pick up runners nothing else she is now redunant as to speak, father is a 1st class worker, would it be a good start to get some rabbit skins on dummys ? not sure really just need help cheers guys.

Ye mate rabbit skins are great fill them with with tuna and garlic roast for 20 minutes. Then put these in the warren as far as u can get your self inside. Then when the dog reaches 86 days exactly show it the warren and ill garuntee you the dog will work has to be exactly 86 days mate or it won't work

As usual people mocking someone who is genuinely asking for help and guidance.

 

First things first, get your pup used to livestock. You may not have the permission now but who's to say a couple of years down the line you don't hit lucky with a few different farms. Last thing you want is your pup setting about the farmers sheep, poultry or spooking his cattle. Keep it on a lead and walk it round near livestock. If it shows any desire to go for them, give it a yank on lead and shout no.

 

As for introducing it to quarry, just take it to wherever there are rats / rabbits about and let it scent about on its own. Sooner or later it will come across something and the penny will drop.

 

It's easier if you've got other dogs the pup can learn off.

 

Once the pup is old enough, try knocking on a few farmers doors, see if you can get some more permission so you can put as much game in front of the pup as you can. That's the only way a pup will gain experience, they learn nothing sat in a kennel.

Stock breaking is very important, other than that build a good bond with the pup, just get out with the pup you will be better off learning by your own mistake's rather than asking for advice from the experts on here. You could also look for some good books.
