put your dog on a lead,,, blow a steady note make your dog lay then blow twice and walk on then blow a steady note again make him lay then another 2 blows and walk on so on so forth keep at it as it'll be few weeks when you let dog of lead before he will drop to the whistle but keep at it,,,,, best of luck we it mate

Some nice weee bits on that video....some not. If your training your dog and you have it working well and its coming back with the retrieve dont keep "peep peeping" the whistle.....

Sorry but I don't agree with this...

 

you need to set the fact a whistle is an extension of the voice, to start you say sit and as you say it you pip the whistle once, ensure the dog sits straight away not when he is ready, if he doesn't push down lightly to make him sit do this many many times and then you say either say sit or pip once and the dog will learn to sit. when mastered go on to the recall make the dog sit walk sideways to start just once step and turn around hold your hand to the dog like a policeman stopping traffic, and walk backwards only 10 ft or so and call your dog to you as you call pip twice, do this many times and you can go further away, and likewise you can drop the name and just use whistle. make sure he comes to you and sits then make a fuss of him.

 

remember a stop whistle which some call the sit whistle means stop not sit, and you need to make sure you break the sit with a command, walk on, heel or what you choose. A good exercise is in a field walk along blow the stop and ensure you stop the dog as you keep walking, do a circle small to start and as you come back to the dog and say heel so the dog gets up and walks with you, blow the stop again, and keep walking in a straight line keeping your back to the dog blow the recall and you dog will come to you, work on that until you have it mastered and the dog will know one pip is sit and stay, this will teach him and will be the start of stopping him at distance.

 

tip, if you blow sit and the dog does not sit as you walk away ensure you take him back, no shouting or hitting, just calmly take him by the scruff or a collar (not the ears) and put him where he was when you blew the stop and if he insists on not staying when you make him sit walk one pace sideways then back away but not far and go back to him, don't always call him as he will be ready for the call and that's when they start to run in. again when you train a dog keep the whistle in your mouth at all times, they will learn if they see you put it in to run in when you do so as they know whats coming.

That's good advise from Philluk, you wont go wrong there. Just remember its not rocket science or extremely hard to do, just patience and being consistent

 

Oh i would say it has enough difficulties....not everyone can do it thats for sure. Can be very time consuming and frustrating. I think if your not the sort of person that can read a dog then youd better just give up...

not really its not difficult but you must have a, patience, and b, time, without those the question should be is a gundog for you??? I don't mean you its general. yes everyone can do it take your time little and often. start slow and close and it will work guarantee it.

for me the stop whistle starts with the hand signal when you feed the pup command word raised hand flat palm and a food bowl in the other hand, soon as pup looks up at the food/hand walk in a bit and it should park its bum . later on combine this signal with a whistle when out with the pup just one time a session, but don't do it when feeding.I only use same whistle or command for sit- stay- stop,

best way to start him or her is when you feed him , make him sit and at the same time use your whistle
