Gracilis Muscle Injury

Recommended Posts

My older dogs been out of action for about 6 weeks i had ran him on miscanthus stubble and he had injured his foot, after resting him the foot still looked bad and he had a limp and he wasn't able to run. Anyway iv just got home from the greyhound vet his foot is fine but his gracilis muscle is f****d. The greyhound man has told me he'd be retired if he was a greyhound but he said i could rest it all summer and see how it goes but no mater what he will be down on speed. Has anyone had this sort of injury in a lurcher? Did the dog run again or isit over?

Cheers Sam

The gracilis mussel is a right pain when it goes. my lurcher did her gracilis along with a mussel in the front leg. She was rested for 3 months just lead walking I let her off the lead for the first time and it went again :-( I rehomed mine to a family friend for a pet as she was having trouble with her tendons as well. Atb

Injury to the Gracilis muscle is common among track dogs but is not as common in hunting dogs I think its usually a tear in the muscle or it can become completely detached from the bone, if its torn then plenty of rest and sessions in the mag box might help if its detached its an expensive operation with good chance the dog will be hampered by it in future second vet opinion might be worthwhile one clued up on coursing dogs one is Paul Evans in Royton Lancashire clued up and doesnt bull shit

My bitch did both of hers, 1st the right leg, when she was 3 years old (on the track) rested her for 6 months, she had a few good runs, then she did her left one.(AT 4 YEARS OLD)

After 12 months rest she started running again, but unfortunately her right one has gone again, she's nearly 6 now so she will just be used for a bit of mooching

Just to add, she did both hers while racing, working never seemed to bother her.

Good luck with your dog

Thanks for the reply's the muscles come completely off of the bone and because of my lack off skill and worrying more about the stubble injury to the foot its been allowed to reattach in the wrong place.

My own dog lucas tore both his gracliss I was told he was finished execpt for marie near london she and brookie off here helped me gve me excerises to do with him all summer. He came back last season lost bita speed but still done his job very well drawing with bulldozer at 5 n half year old so they can come back. As long as treated right. Don't run or gallop him all summer just let the dog run with in himself get odzone rub it in gracliss 3 days a week for 6 weeks after 4 weeks swim him build his muscle back up. You just gota be sensibale now with dog make sure nxt season his gracliss are well warmed up before you slip him he shud be ok. Atb with it.

if the Gracilis muscle was completely detached and some how managed to reattach itself in the wrong position it will need surgical intervention to put it right go to an experienced vet who is used to dealing with such injuries or if the d og is quite aged then retire it.
