Wooden Silencer

Recommended Posts

i was thinking the other day about making a silencer to make my Gamo Rocket a lot quieter as it has a shrouded barrel that doesnt seem to make a difference.

thinking about wood and how it must dampen noise levels MAY BE ive decided to try and make one just a slip over barrel version.

one outer casing and one inner casing.

The innner casing will have holes drilled in this to hopefully absorb sound while there will be an air gap between both the inner and outer casing so i can try different materials such as glued saw dust in a tube formation so it slides beetween the inner and outer casings.

If this doesnt work then i will try packed cotton wool

then packed foam ear plugs between the two casings

ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS ANY ONE

One thing you have to consider when using wood is the change in temperature and moisture levels as wood will expand and contract.

Think about the tolerances involved. Especially the bore.

Good luck

Sounds like a really fun experiment.

My initial concerns are;

Durability against elements and knocks.

Warping?

Shrinking and expansion, specifically at the point it attaches to the barrel.

Benefits could be;

Low cost,

Matches the stock! Hehe

Pigeons imagine they're staring at a branch!

woodworm could be a long term problem
