esoxluscious 44
does siltex/lime disperse the silt or harden it up? and would anybody have any advice on the benefits of removing perch, will it benefit the roach/rudd/tench size etc? Quote Link to post
leegreen 2,250
does siltex/lime disperse the silt or harden it up? and would anybody have any advice on the benefits of removing perch, will it benefit the roach/rudd/tench size etc? lime helps change acid water to alkaline, it also helps break down plant matter at the bottom of lakes, reducing silt and making nutrients available. If anything removing perch will lessen the size of fish. As perch eat smallish fish, it leaves more food available to the larger fish. 1 Quote Link to post
Waz 4,293
Bumped into a digging mate of mine who used to live in the village, he fished it as a teenager well over 20 year ago. & the carp in there were about 2 foot in length then! The main work required listed in the inspection report from last year is a monk system, and bolstering up the dam wall wet and dry side. Their is already a bottom outlet so depending on the bore of that, might be able to reuse or line it out. But there is talk of new regs that a monk system may not be required. Which will save a lot of money. Theres plenty of coypu shit around the lake, and after about my 20th visit saw one for the 1st time swimming. Also picked myself up a 3.5m boat that came with an outboard, wasnt looking to get an outboard, but will come in handy mashing up the lime. But there again if I drain it, might aswell get the lime taken out by machine. Agree Lee, perch will predate on the small stuff, caught a few perch on much bigger spinners than youd think they have a go on! Might put a dozen trout in for me mates to have the craic once its officially mine (6-8 weeks hopefully). Plenty of frog spawn in their the other day, hope it all gets eaten. & found what I think is toad spawn which I have never seen before, looked like a dormant coiled snake in the shallows. Waz 4,293
A little update if anyone is interested. The sale all went through this week, between viewing it and actually becoming the owner (4 months) all ive done is walk round it all and get a feel for it. Might have put nigh on 20 kilo of floating mixer & as soon as the warmer days kicked in had 4 or 5 carp mopping them up at either end of the lake, especially the shallow inlet end, although the last week I think they are spawning. Biggest I say ive seen is probably 12lb maybe!? conservative guess. Been offered some unwanted fish of 25lb but umming and ahhing, would prefer to wait till autumn when the water is cooler. Chucked a crayfish trap in on the of-chance and hauled it out this evening, not sure if I was glad or not to find a few in their 9 in all, 2 looked native and 7 signal ones. Glad to see them in their as I always wanted to try trapping them after seeing them in the River Colne & never getting round to it, and not so glad to see the little b*****ds do love a boilie. Anyway, I'd remember reading Stubby's exploits on here, so a quick search and read here, plus a few youtube flicks. & the verdict is they taste nice. But not a lot of meat on them. Upto my eyes in work, but will get some hours in as and when to make a couple of comfortable swims, thinking 4. As soon as they start having the floaters will get down there with a bubble float. 1 Quote Link to post
Waz 4,293
Also found a nesting duck, went back 2 days later and not a sign, seen a pair but no ducklings. So guess maybe predated on. Now its mine will get the trailcam batteries on charge and see what is on the move around there. Quote Link to post
