snoopdog 1,256
i was just thinking and wondering how many running dogs can you work to there full potencial e.g. ive got my allrounder and lamp dog ..and if everthing goes to plan a coursing pup on its way around october for me two is enough ..i think a lamping dog or allrounder should be going out at the very least two nights a week and a day at the weekend ..iam not on about going for walks iam on about working them hard ...and a coursing dog wants too be worked about two days a week thats my spare time so to speak used up ....i know lads have more dogs and lasses ....but how the hell do you find the time to work them as they should be worked ....question is really how many dogs do you think you can work as they should be worked >??????iam talking about and avrage..(spell ) person with an lets say for e.g. starts work at 730 -5pm ... ps the most i have ever had in my kennel running dogs that is ...is two all the best snoop Quote Link to post
Guest SJM
The most lurchers I have had at the one time has been 6 and that was when I was in my late teens and I was hunting obsessed, I was out from first thing in the morning to last thing at night. I used to run one or two in the morning, come home, swap dogs out again in the afternoon, then home for tea and back out again at night lamping When you do that day in day out you need a couple of lurchers as injuries etc can put dogs out of action so you need another one to take its place. Nowadays I find 2-4 is adequate as Im still out a lot, but not to the same extent as I dont go lamping anymore. I dont know how people who work find the time for a lot of lurchers, hats off to them as its hard work, training and working a lot of dogs Quote Link to post
Guest Frank
I find 2 enough really myself, but, as SJM, have had 3-4 dogs on the go, working everyday and night back in the early 90's. That was when i was on my, now that im married and have a young lad to raise ect, time is not a luxury. My 2 year old bitch and my 6 & a 1/2 month pup should keep me going for a while, but, i am tempted with another well bred pup, i shall see I think if you have the time, space and quarry to satisfie your hord of runners, then go for it. No good having 3 or 4 odd dogs and no work for them, stuck in a high rise flat in hackeney , it would be just cruel for them. Al the best Frank. Edited July 6, 2007 by Frank Quote Link to post

FERRETBOY 680
i would also say two is enough to be able to work them to there full potential.imo i believe that anymore can be hard work and any less you can have problems. we have got the three lurchers at the moment bramble and the two pups but come the pups first proper season me and my dad are going to put as much time as we can into our pups. but i will never have just the one dog again as you can lose alot of valuable hunting time due to knocked up or injured dogs. good hunting rew Quote Link to post

How is it possible to keep 11 dogs fit and worked? I would struggle with more than 2!! I got one old dog, and a Pup. Hopefully have a Lucher sometime next year....... Quote Link to post
chester 147
2 is enough for me mate when you are working. and you need to find some amount of game. take a pre ban hare dog thats 12 hares you got 2 run per dog mate week in week out in season its a lot of time you got to put in .and its hard when u got to bring cash in to feed the kidds and keep a roof over yer head. snoopdog 1,256
THATS MY POINT TOO IAM NOT TRYING TO PUT ANYBODY DOWN BUT UNLESS YOU CAN GET OUT FIVE NIGHTS A WEEK THROUGH THE SEASON AND SAT AND SUN I REALLY DONT SEE HOW YOU CAN WORK MORE THAN TWO HARD ...NOW SOME PEPOLE ARE LUCKY AND HAVE SHIFT WORK OR SO MANY DAYS OFF AND SO MANY DAYS ON ...THEN MAYBE YOU CAN RUN UP TO FOUR .....OR IF YOU WORK FOR YOURSELF WHICH I USED TO DO THEN YOU CAN FIND THE TIME .....TO BE HONEST WITH YOU,, I WORK OUTSIDE AND WHEN THE WEATHERS BEEN LIKE IT HAS BEEN FOR THE LAST FEW WEEKS ITS BEEN HARD COMING HOME WET THROUGH EVERYDAY AND THE GETTING CHANGED AND GOING OUT IN THE SHITY WEATHER AGAIN ..I DO IT DONT GET ME WRONG BUT ITS BEEN GETTING ME DOWN BIG TIME ....;..IF PEOPLE HAVE MORE THAN TWO RUNNING DOGS AND WORK THEM LIKE THEY SHOULD BE WORKED THEN GOOD ON THEM BECAUSE I DONT THINK I COULD DO IT ..I HAVE CERTAINLY TIME TOO RUN TWO BUT ANYMORE WOULDNT BE RIGHT ON THE DOGS......FOR ME THAT IS ... MAYBE I SHOULD START WORKING FOR MYSELF AGAIN I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THREE Quote Link to post
PAUL73 0
i used to have 8 i went out 7 nights a week and never could work them all one or two tops i would say Quote Link to post
Bosun11 537
Two at present and thats what i've always regarded as my ideal, with work an such any more would just not get out enough to do them justice, PLUS if an when I do get time on my hands, I can then really get the most out of the dogs I run. Nothing beats a real 'good week' out as much as you possibly can, testing you and your dogs metal. Special times!!! Quote Link to post
Guest JDF
two would be plenty. Quote Link to post
juckler123 707
Ive seen the the odd occasion when ive had five dogs on the yard and all laid up but i never went for six. I was younger then and you could make as much money lamping as you could going to work so thats what we did for a living even then though it would be the pup i reared at the time who would get the most work. Now im happy with the one and even though im out every day[never been one for working for someone else] he will never see to hard a life when the pups grown at about two -two and a half then i will get another ready to fill his boots. Its suprising how much work a well bred lurcher is capable of i lived off one dog for three years and during that time he never had time off sometimes twice a day in the morning ferreting or coursing and lamping or whatever at night.
